Looking for .308 rifle

i was surprised to hear you say that you already have a garand, and since the action was so similar, you didnt want an m1a, but to each his own i suppose.

my garands are the reason i drool when i see a nice springfield m1a.

since you dont want what my first option would be if i were the one buying it, and you dont want what my second choice would be, which is an lr308 or an ar10, and you dont want an ak style (which i wouldnt either honestly) or a bolt action,,,,,,,,,,,,

i would have to say the fal, and the only kind of fal i would want would be a fn-fal.

following your criteria my second option would be a g3, and lastly a cetme, but ive heard the latter can be pretty roughly finished.

if i were shopping for a 308, there would only be 3 options.

m, 1, and a, with a side of nm.

Why wait? Get a DPMS LR 308 TAC 20. I got mine for $980 on Dec 31st. The barrel reminds me of the M240 barrel. The magazines from DPMS were originally designed for the SR 25 and now about 4-5 companies use the same magazines. Pre-panic, the 19 rd mags were $22 and now you can still get them for $27 or so.
The AP4 in .308 is also an excellent choice and the Sportical with its light-weight barrel.
There are other manufacturers of the same platform as the LR .308 (CMMG) and you can put a 22 inch Krieger barreled Fulton Armory Upper on it.
The whole system is very versatile and a lot more accurate than anything that has been suggested so far. It costs money to maintain an M1A with that kind of consistent accuracy which is a lot less expensive to maintain on the DPMS LR .308 platform.
Just my opinion.

To get a FAL to shoot to that level is going to cost you-if that is even possible. To get an M1A to shoot to that level is also going to cost you - anywhere from $2500 to $3000+.

Only if you have a poorly built parts gun. Been there, done that. My present FAL was built from parts by a great gun smith and I have no problems hitting what I want out to 300m. Sure the holes don't touch but if I want that I will switch to a bolt gun with optics not irons. The FAL is a field accurate combat rifle and fills my need just fine.

Got targets? I would be interested to see the accuracy. I am always looking for something new and different.

Maverick223,

I have shot the M240 in competition - back then it was called the Belgian GPMG (General Purpose Machine Gun) or the MAG 58. I shot it in competition against the ANZUK forces (Autralia, New Zealand, United Kingdom), our platoon of snipers representing the Lion Brigade (Singapore Armed Forces 1976) came out 3rd out of all the teams present.
When I joined the U.S. Army and ended up being assigned to the 82nd Airborne division at Ft. Bragg, I ended up in the weapons platoon which had M60s -- I did not like the M60 and thought that the MAG 58 was a superior weapon - it was to become the M240!

Gus McCrae,

You have every right to ask me to put up or shut up but I must decline right now. I proved to myself that it was an accurate and in some ways a superior platform. Look at what Fulton Armory is doing with it. Even with the factory (heavy assed barrel -) it is capable of 1 moa - that is an attested fact in the experience of many shooters.

That answer may seem like a cop-out but I am, at this moment, trying to finish a thesis for my graduate history and languages program. Frankly, I don't have the time or the money to satisfy your curiosity about the accuracy of the AR 10/DPMS LR .308 platform. So sorry, no targets.

Para,
Not a cop out at all. I did my 4 year degree in 3 so I know a little of the crunch you are under. Did not mean to sound like I was calling you out, but I have always been interested in what the two could do side by side. I have a friend that rants and raves about the AR10, though he does not own one, being the greatest thing since sliced bread. I would love to run a my FAL against an AR10 sometime just to see. Though I am pretty sure the AR10 will whip my poor old FAL... :)

On a side note my brother was a 240B team leader with the 1st Infantry Regiment at Ft. Myer VA. Ya'll could talk for hours on the 240.

Sorry gotime242,
I would not buy that model. I would, however, buy the Rem 700 in SS with the 5R barrel. I think that along with their new triggers is the best thing for a factory Remington 700.

I think the 5R barrel concept was made popular by Boots Obermeyer (Famous custom barrel maker) or he just popularized it.

Gus,
You are most probably correct.:D

Not to sound like I'm second guessing but, couple of questions. What are you planning on doing with it? Does the $1000 include a scope? Why .308?

Klineia,
To answer your questions, I plan to do some hardcore target shooting to improve my overall ability to accuratly fire a weapon like that. Also, to add to my big collection of fine firearms. Why .308? I feel I need a weapon of a bigger caliber for my collection. I also want a bigger gun to work on my flinch/shooting posture, etc. And if it comes with a scope and is under $1000, thats perfect. I'm a pretty good shot with the little guns, but I need to master my shooting abilities. Someday, I would like to enter a shootin match.
I'll be happy to tell you more if you'd like.

^That really sounds like a person who wants a bolt gun, IMHO.

Someday, I would like to enter a shootin match.

What kind of match do you want to enter? That should help with recommendations.

If you're looking for long distance target shooting, .308 is a good choice. I've had my eye on a Savage 12BVSS in .223 for target, it is available in .308, but it doesn't sound like that's what you're looking for. It's a bolt gun with a box magazine.

Here's the thing, I already own a variety of bolt guns and would like another semi-auto. I guess I should tell you some of the things I own to give yall a better idea.

Browning model 52 with Leupold M8-4X Compact -22LR
Remington 700 in 22-250 with Leupold 12X-BURRIS
Remington Sportmaster 512 - 22LR
Mauser model 66 in 30-06
Winchester model 70XT with Leupold 4x12 Vari-XII
Then a few WWII bolt rifles including a Mosin Nagant, M44 Carbine, Kar98k, Enfield, Garand, M1 Carbine
Romy AK47
Winchester model 07 in 351

and alot of others that would take awhile to type out haha.

Well, i don't exactly know what kind of match, but I need to make myself immune to a bigger type gun, while I want another semi gun like the AK.

When did they make M1s in a bolt action...I HAVE to get me one of those. :neener:

The venerable M1A from Springfield Armory is the benchmark .308 / 7.62mm rifle in the category you describe. Shop diligently for a good used one and keep saving your money in the mean time. Good luck in your pursuit of a .308
