I'm looking for a mid size fixed blade knife to wear openly on my gun belt while in the outdoors. I'd like it to be an authentic style from the 1865-1900 era. I'd also like it to be handmade in the USA and come sharpened. Nothing fancy just a good quality working knife that would have been popular at the time. All recomendations welcome. Thanks

that northwoods hunter is nice, but in order to look authentic it has to be carbon steel.

This got me to searching to see what a cowboy knife is! here's the Marbles version:http://www.marblesoutdoors.com/cowboyseries/cowboyknife.html

It seems good, is carbon steel but I don't know about handmade. Handmade means custom to me! I make a bigger 5" Bowie-type camp knife but I don't think that's what you're looking for. I don't know of any makers making a cowboy knife but I wish I did. Do some searching around the 'net and you may find one.

Is this a using knife? What sort of use? How much are you willing to pay?

You've described a custom fixed blade that could easily cost $200 from a good, but lesser known, maker. Alternately, you could find an older fixed blade in good condition that needs the handle material replaced and get the knife for a song and rehandled for the refrain.

How much money are you looking to spend? That would facilitate a great deal in narrowing the options, as there are quite a few that meet your criteria (everything from inexpensive Schrades to the brilliant custom mrmevel displayed)

Somehow I don't some mo-honkin chunk o' steel is quite "mid size".

I assume you're looking for a 5-7" cowboy knife with a wood, bone or stag handle.

You've not said what you're willing to pay so it is almost not possible to make a recomendation.

Look at Bark River, Silver Stag, Marbles, etc.

Or, you could make your own. Get a carbon steel blade from Texas Knifemaker's Supply, pick a nice set of jigged bone handle scales, epoxy and rivet the whole thing together and you've got your own knife.

Heck, you could build a Nessmuk knife from an Old Hickory. http://gbrannon.bizhat.com/skinner.htm
