Looking for help on a Remington 550

Removing it is quite difficult but cleaning it is easy. Separate the stock from the rest of the gun. Get an aerosol can of brake cleaning fluid from an auto parts store and, using the extension squirter attached to the can, spray the floating chamber. I don't know what is in that stuff but it cuts through the gunk quite well. It's not bad for cleaning the bore, either. Keep it away from wood, it will strip off varnish and most anything else, leaving a mess. Be sure to do all of this outdoors. That stuff STINKS!

Anybody have a pic or video detailing this "floating chamber"? Nothing in the area of the chamber of my gun seems to float. How do I check for proper function?

Overcame my problem. Got my 62 year old rifle feeding well and popping primers. Now I can't wait to shoot it. If that goes OK next is cosmetic augmentation. Mine is pretty ugly right now. Here is a pic of the mysterious "floating chamber": DSC06301.jpg

Barrel acne can be a beautiful thing! Have you tried the gun with some of the "low velocity" LR ammo out there? (If you can find any?) My 550-1 loves the stuff. It sounds like a BB gun and the empties just dribble out the side of the gun.
