I'm putting together a lesson plan for Ohio CCW training and looking for quality video tapes to use in the class so the students don't have to just listen to me talk for 10+ hours. I do police basic training regularly and have some materials that will transfer, but they are primarily geared to uniform duty. I don't want to end up spending a lot of money on tapes that turn out to be useless or poor quality.

So if you know of any tapes that you would recommend on topics such as safety, weapon selection, carry considerations, legal issues or any other topic useful for concealed carry classes please let me know.

Please give title, source, approximate run time and price if you know of any. Also any comments on strengths or weaknesses of various tapes would also be very helpful.

Thanks in advance to all who can help out.

Don't use the training tape that Ky mandates. By the time it was over we were all drawing bow ties on the target that we had to qualify on :D .

(inside joke for anyone who had to sit through it)

It's good to get a list now of things that might be useful however I wouldn't spend any money on any until Oh decides just what needs to be taught & if videos will be allowed.

Check with the NRA.

Be sure to make sure your proposed curriculum works with Ohio's laws first though. The thing that trips instructor's up here in Michigan is that the instructor has to be certfified through a training organization (usually the NRA) AND the instructor has to teach his class in accordance with the rules of that organization. That means that for the instructor to teach as a NRA Certified Instructor, he must follow the NRA curriculum for any course he teaches. If he makes up his own curriuculum, even if it meets the bare requirements outlined in Michigan state law, he can no longer claim to be teaching it as a NRA Certified Instructor and the course is technically invalid.

I don't know if the Ohio law is similiar, but you may wish to check it out before you develop your own curriculum.

We've been in touch with the Ohio Peace Officers Training Commission on this issue. They tell us they are not going to put out a curriculum or issue training standards or qualifications. They will do only what the law mandates, which is to design the application forms and make up the required brochures. Thus it is going to be up to the instructor or school to show that their program meets the requirements set by the law.

I'm already certified as an instructor by OPOTC, and the CCW law specifically recognizes both that and NRA instructor certification. The law says nothing about how the classes are taught, just specifies certain topics that must be covered.

Cool. Sounds like your covered with your OPOTC cert.

As for videos, if you have access to police training vids, I understand that "Surviving Edged Weapons" is highly reccomended. I've never seen it, but I'm trying to get a copy. I'm not sure how appropriate showing the whole thing might be, but you may try showing selected parts of different videos to demonstrate different ideas.

I have Ayoob's "Stressfire" video, but I think it's better as a refresher if you've had his class than it would be to introduce students to the material.

Deadly Force: Firearms, Self-Defense & the Law 1 hour, 40 minutes

- Police officials discuss how they decide if someone was justified in shooting.
- Can you pull a gun just to scare someone away ?
- Are warning shots a good idea ?
- Real violent criminals who have faced armed citizens relate their stories and reveal what they fear most.
- Do you know the legal difference between shooting to wound and shooting to kill ?
- Is extreme anger a legal justification for using deadly force ?
- Can you be sued even if you were justified in shooting ?
- Attorneys describe where the legal lines are drawn between legitimate self defense and criminal acts.
- Former Prosecutors discuss how courts and juries regard self defense cases.

I have the Edged Weapons video and use it for my police classes. It's one of the best training tapes I've found. I may use some excerpts, but at 90 minutes there's just too much of it that is police specific to run the whole thing.

I appreciate all the responses. I knew this forum would come through.
