Looking to buy a rifle..

Hi all,
I usually don't venture into this area of THR (I am definitely a shotgun guy) but I would very much like to buy some kind of autoloader rifle pre-election. I have always had a huge crush on the M14/M1 Scout type rifles but am currently on about a 700$ gun budget. After checking GunsAmerica it looks like I am under by about 1k, but is there any semi-cheap alternative rifle that I can buy with 700$ and perhaps upgrade into a "battle rifle" EBR/Scout type? I get enough use out of AR style platforms and AKs are just hideous to me, any advice from yall?

You MIGHT find a decent Garand for that kind of money....

I was going to say, get a Saiga, do a nice bit of conversion to it yourself, and you can have it all, for about 5 to 600 bucks... But it is an ak, even if you have the 22 inch bbl, and put some nice wood furniture on it...

by the by, what is the cart you are looking to fire from it, because there is allways a ruger ranch rifle in 223 or 762.39...
for classic , look for a remmy 7400 , in all the good cals, 30.06, 243, 308, 270, etc. not a 742, nor a mod 4. but you will be limited to 10 round mags at the most...

since you like the M14 style of rifle I would suggest a Ruger Mini 14 or Mini 30 similar action and design but different calibers and price
