First of, hello to all, as this is my first post. I'm very happy to be here. I am fairly new to firearm enthusiasm but I'm looking forward to learning more and more.

My question:

I have recently picked up this GSG Ak-47, which is basically a .22 replica of the AK, signed off on by kalashnikov. It seems like an outstanding range rifle/plinker for the money. Plus, I adore the price of .22LR for some fun shooting! My Yugo SKS is NOT nearly as affordable to shoot.

I have also purchased a weaver mount red dot sight. The only optic mounting option that GSG offers that I can see, is a side mount.

I'm ok with this if need be, But I'd prefer a top mount of some kind. I am not really strongly versed with regard to all of this sight and scope mounting stuff so I'm not exactly sure of my options.

I did find this:

Which fits most AKs, but I'm not sure it would work for the GSG, but that's kinda what I'm looking for I guess.

As far as I know (I have a GSG AK too) it is not made to the same specs as a regular AKM and the usual mounts, furniture etc. will not fit. I would use the mount that GSG offers and use any red dot of your choice. Mine is not particularly accurate so I really haven't been too keen on mounting optics on it.

It's interesting that you don't like the accuracy of yours. While I am yet to fire mine, I've heard all kinds of wonderful things about them. Thanks for the input. I don't know why I'm not feeling the side rail, but I guess I'll get used to it.

The mounts that attach to the dust cover do not hold zero. They make mounts that replace the rear sight and attaches to the rear trunnion. They are expensive.

The above applies to AKs, I am not sure about the 22lr AK.

Thank you! That's plenty for me to know the right option is the tactical side mount. I appreciate the advice. Especially, knowing that keeping zero will be a problem which is obviously a deal breaker for me. No wonder they are so cheap, and they shouldn't even be sold. Thanks!

I'll echo what was said above- do not mount anything to the top of the receiver. It shifts and is not a solid mounting point.
