Well got the crappy news today via email. For the last five (6 this year) my father, brother and I have been part of a hunting club of about 30 members. Member count varied from year to year, but there was a core of about 25 of us. We lease a parcel of about 1200 acres. $150 bucks per person a year for that kind of access with so few members was awesome. Hardly ever seen other members because most of them lived on the boarders of the property and would hunt near their homes.

Anyways got a n email from the property owners (Landvest) saying that they were selling the property to New York state and would not be renewing any leases. All tree stands must be down by the end of June. Once the property is in the ownership of the state it will most likely become a wild life management area, which anyone will be able to hunt. So now we have to take our stands down and our "exclusive" spot will be open to the public. Being a resident and having that kind of access at no charge is great, but every other public piece within a 45 min drive I have hunted has been an absolute nightmare come rifle season. Bow season fortunately the woods are rather empty. So I fear the same will become of this property.

To top it off they have not given a closing date. SO, since the lease is up in june there is a chance that the property will not be in possession of NYS by the time hunting season rolls around. Meaning we can't be on the property at all because we are not leasees nor is it public property. What a friggin bummer.

Sounds like you have several choices:
1 -Take up bow hunting
2 - Find another lease somewhere else
3 - Get that core together and go buy your own piece of property
4 - Do some hunts in other parts of the country

Good suggestions. I do bow hunt. This bow season is out of the question (my little one is due first week of October which is bow opener so already figuring I won't get out much LOL)

My dad and i work for John Deere dealer and may have some in's on a couple of farms. Hopefully... I guess I shouldn't be surprised that we lost the piece as it was only a lease after all just didn't expect it at all. Landvest bought it up 2 years ago and was supposed to log some of it, and they haven't logged it yet so I figured we were in the clear, I was wrong as usual:uhoh:

I feel for you. Losing my hunting ground would be devastating to me too.
Use your connections at JD to secure a hunting spot until something more permanent comes along.
Let me remind you that we do not know what's in store for us. You may look back at this and say,"if we hadn't lost that lease, we wouldn't have..........?"
Enjoy your new youngster. I wouldn't trade any of my three for all the deer in NY.

sorry to here that bones. i know the feeling losing your hunting grounds. if ever down in orange co. you are welcome to hunt.

Thanks appreciate that!

Well said, and I think you're right. The longer I'm around on this rock the more it seems like stuff happens for a reason, whether it's crappy or good. And thats coming from a dude who's not religious LOL. Thanks :)

I would suggest that you immediately find out if the land was "up for sale" and how and when it was offered to the public, and what was the price, or if the property was claimed by the state and the state is merely giving Landvest a "fair price" for the property. The latter there isn't anything really that you can do so long as it was managed in a legit manner, but the former, there may have been some odd-business going on.

Wouldn't be the first time that "The State" (any state) grabbed a piece of land to add to its "parks", calling it a WMA, but with limited hunting where you have to draw a tag..., and nobody digs into the matter and finds out, gee it always seems to be a core few government officials (or the families or friends) who draw the limited tags...resulting in establish their own hunting spot with taxpayer funds, and nobody is the wiser..... o_O

Here's one of the emails. It sounds like it's a done deal.

Bones: Sorry to hear the lease was lost.

NY state has a muzzleloader season, i would recommend that: Relatively few folks hunt during muzzleloader season.
Thats a good idea! I old have an old cva optima in my safe, I should break it out. I haven't touched it since I was 16-17 (orther than moving) . I'm scared to see what that breech plug looks like:what:.

Edit to add. One of my co workers is really into traditional muzzle loading. I should hit him up one of these days and give it a try. They are wicked cool. Just seems like a PITA to deal with.

I wish NYS did a muzzleloader/handgun season:(

That's the way to go.

i got back into traditional muzzle hunting in about 2012 after Fort Sill outlawed inline muzzleloaders on Quanah Parker range. Since then i've killed one or two deer every year with a side hammer .50 or .54 caliber muzzleloader using patched round ball.

Man, that sucks.

$150 a year is incredible, and unheard of where I live.
I pay $600 for lease dues, and consider myself fortunate.
Yea man we were making out pretty good.

When I was a kid growing up we had a house near cherry plain state park. We only had 10 acres. Across the road the property was owned by Cowee lumber ( the same group that owned the lease discussed here before Landvest). It was a few thousand acres. Our road was a dead end, at the top of the road the state park land began. Again there is a few thousand acres. So between the old Cowee land and the state park we had access to a ridiculous amount of property. We moved off that property and sold the house when my parents split. My uncle lived two houses down from us, so we still hunted that land. We hunted it all the way up to 2011. In 2011 cowee sold the property to Landvest (yes they got us twice now) . Landvest asked us not to hunt there so we respected their request and no longer hunted there. From there we hunted state land in petersburg for two terrible seasons. At that point a friend got us into the hunting club that leased the property that the first post is about. When we joined the hunting club, the lease was through Cowee . In 2017 Landvest bought the lease peice from Cowee. However this time they honored our lease . Which waswas the 2017 and 2018 seasons. But come 2019 Landvest is selling the land to the state. Cant blame Landvest because that's just what the do, but ain't happy about it lol. Always took for grant it that property I grew up hunting. Man THAT was good.

the old school mz stuff is fun. not much muss or fuss. jut clean every thing with hot soapy water. i don't have to much right now but do have a 45 hawken a underhammer hopkins and allen 15ga.

Thompson center made a single shot black powder pistol called patriot that could be carried in NY and used for hunting if you had it listed on your pistol permit.

I used my 58 new army rem during regular season one year. First and only Time it ever misfired. Had a doe in the sights at 20 yds. Cap firedaim charge didn't hato pull the nipple and loosen powder so it reached the bottom of the cylinder.
And yes the deer ran away.

I hunt state game land in broome and chenango counties mostly, but have ventured farther north to a small town called east Hamilton to a friends property. I usually sit in a hedge row between 3 cornfields where a 500 yd shot is possible.

pretty much my style of hunting, most i hunt are old farms with clusters of 5 to 30 acre fields. shots can be 50 yards or over 400 if you shoot across hedge rows. the woods are normally close to.

Just looked that Patriot up, really cool pistol.

I grew up in rural TN, with a family that owned a lot of wood patches and pasture. Hunted almost 25 years in Oregon on public land, further spoiled. Here in NM, odds for a tag are very low, and if you want to buy a landowner tag you'll get to donate a couple of grand or more to some rancher's bank account. You had a good thing at $150 - I'd gladly pay far more than that to get to know I was going to hunt each fall. Hmmm, maybe it will turn out that I will do just that around here, dangit....

Count your blessings that you had the lease for so long & for so cheap. You will adapt to the management area in due time.
