This is a rifle I received from my grandfather. Model 54 Carbine in 30-06 (c. 1930). Came scoped, but also has this receiver sight base. The slide assembly is long gone, unfortunately. I’d like to try to locate a replacement, but not sure how realistic it is to find a replacement or how well one would actually fit if I did, since these assemblies were hand fitted. The base doesn’t appear to have a model stamped on it, so not 100% sure which model it is. The stock is inletted quite a ways below the base, so wondering if it didn’t have a long slide on it. If I could find the right part, I wouldn’t mind going back to the irons.

Thank you for the link. I think it’s a 48, but there are no markings that I can tell. With the adjustable indicator on the base, I figured the slide would have the scale engraved directly in it versus the adjustable scale on the one linked. Am I way off with that assumption?

i believe winchester offered them from the factory, tho i think the 48 came out after the 54 was made. i think there are 2 dovetail sizes for the lyman peeps, if the same they will fit. i have the same one you pictured, and a few 57s. did you look under the peep, i have seen them marked there when there not in the normal place.

You will need to replace the sight as a unit. The base and slide were serialized because they were hand fitted.

This is what I’ve heard/was afraid of... really bummed about this. May just abort and reinstall the vintage scope that was on it when I received it... it’s not the same vintage as the rifle, and it isn’t a Lyman Alaskan or something. Pretty sure it’s a 2 or 4x Weaver. Will have to check it out a little more closely.

i may have one that will work for you, but i won't be home for about a week to check.

I don't understand your concern about installing a replacement receiver sight of the same type that was on the rifle. It only has two screws, just take the old base off and install the replacement base with the complete sight assembly. The Winchester's are easy to work on. The first place I would look for the sight is on eBay and I would think a receiver sight for the Model 70 will fit the Model 54. Hope you find what you want.

I guess it’s a purely sentimental attitude. The rifle has been in my family for nearly 100 years, and I’d like to keep it as original as possible by keeping the parts that it came with on it, even if that means abandoning the pursuit of a peep sight and leaving it scoped. I could always put a more “period” scope in it - I have the 2.5x Weaver that was on it when I received it.

However... there has been a development! My folks came across a Lyman slide while going through my late grandfather’s jewelry box, and it appears to be a match! Will be a few days before I can lay hands on it and test fit it, but I am very hopeful! Fingers crossed!
