Hey everyone, I'm tossing around getting a .22lr AR so that I can actually afford to train more than once or twice a month. My biggest question is this: How similar is the trigger on the 15-22 to the normal M&P 15? The trigger on my M&P 15 is pretty awful, heavy with lots of creep and stacking with no overtravel, and a decently predictable reset. I don't want to change the stock trigger and spoil myself before I enter the military, but I still want to be able to train. This is my stumbling block: I can get a .22 upper or a 15-22 for pretty much the same price. Opinions?

Personal choice, but I would get the M&P 15-22. I am not sure a 22 LR upper would cost you as much and you would be using the same trigger as your regular upper. Me I just like having an additional gun.

Do what works best for you.
Jim

The trigger on the 15-22 is the exact same as any other AR-15. Any aftermarket AR trigger will fit.

Smartest thing you could do at your age would be to save your money and let the military worry about training you when you get there.

The trigger on my 15-22 is very comparative to a "parts kit trigger"

Its also my understanding that its a compatable part

I went with a dedicated 22 upper because I wanted to use it as my trainer rifle. It weighs the same as my 223 upper...only difference being recoil and weight of the mag/ammo.

The MP 15/22 is very light, which is nice, but it just doesn't feel the same as a real AR15.

ETA: You can always get a different trigger for MP 15/22 if you dislike it that much.

Not a great deal of difference. My M&P15 (5.56) had a normal AR feel to the trigger. I did however polish the trigger and get it where I really like it. I do not recommend doing this unless you have experience with them though. If you polish to aggressively, you cut away the hardend steel, and weaken the trigger. I liked the M&P15-22 I owned except for the "composite feel", I could never get used to it. So I sold it and the Colt M4-22 and bought two CMMG Quebec-A AR15's in .22 caliber. I love them due to the fact that they have 14.5" exposed barrels(1.6" inside the upper to bypass the NFA stamp), and the fact I can use the CMMG lowers with any other standard AR upper. Plus I like the magazines better for the CMMG's, the M&P's were a little long for my tastes.

I have 3 ARs with milspec triggers and a 15-22. They are very similar. I train with both.
