My M1's op-rod has just enough rub to lightly take off the finish on one side, about as wide as a pencil marking, and about three inches long, I'm at work now, i'd have to get back with more specifics.

it is rubbing on the metal lip from the stock that helps keep the stock and action together.... crap, sorry my description sucks... anyhow.. how can i adjust this ever so slightly or do you know of an M1 gunsmith around the Sac area?

also anyone know how to make cone mounts for an Oigee Berlin pre-war scope?

The "fix" is to correct the bedding of the stock, NEVER attempting to bend the op rod.

If you attempt to bend the op rod, all you will do is make REAL trouble up in the gas cylinder.

Almost ALL non National Match M1's rub a slight amount on the stock ferrule.
In Service issue rifles this is a non-issue.

If you're Match conditioning an M1, one of the steps is glass bedding the stock, and part of this involves using a spacer to insure the ferrule is centered around the op rod.

thats good to know. so is it possible to adjust by sanding just a hair on the wood to move the ferrile a tad?
the rubbing bothers me a bit

I suppose you could reset the ferrule off to the side a little, probably by sanding and using epoxy to remount the ferrule, but this is NOT the right way to do it.

Since the ferrule is part of the bedding system, likely all that you'll do is put the action under stress, and DECREASE accuracy.

Again, almost ALL non-Match M1's do this, and unless you have a Match conditioned rifle, it's not an issue.
In other words, it's not likely to improve your groups.

dupe??

screw it, it'll just stay then. thanks for your input. all im used to hearing is that oprod rub is the devil and such.

thanks again.

I think he was meaning a duplicant post and not pointed at you. I own several M-1's one being match tuned in 308 by one of the better M-1 gun plumbers. The op rods rub lightly here and there, just part of the beast.

There are a couple reasons why the oprod might rub the ferrule--the barrel may not be well indexed, the barrel band or the gas cylinder might not be aligned well on the barrel. It might be the oprod. Any change you make on the oprod will affect it's fit in 4 to 5 places--the slot on the receiver, the saddle under the barrel, the ferrule and the gas cylinder--and some of these are prone to premature wear-out. Needless to say, the bending of oprods is an art and a very black art at that and is something you would do after you fixed all other alignment problems. The Kuhnhausen shop manual devotes several pages and a handful of illustrations to the subject and it still leaves you scratching your head.

Also, I wouldn't mess with the ferrule unless you planned to hog out the stock around the receiver and bed it, thus ensuring that everything is aligned properly and that you aren't creating any new problems. More than likely, you'll move the ferrule and the oprod will move right along with it.

If the rifle is cycling properly, I'd leave it alone. If it really bugs you, pay someone that really knows what they're doing to fix it.
