hey ya'll,i may or may not be the exception to the rule, but i was able to get all that gooey crap that the army soaked the stock with.does anyone know what product to put back on the stock that will dry completely? incase your wondering i left the lower portion of the stock alone i replaced it with one from boyds but im still using the upper and forward hand guard those are the items i was able to get all that crap out of.anyway,i never take my m1 out when it rains so a water repellent isn't an issue im just looking for something that wont bleed out of the wood when the barrel heats it up.thx in advance

Lots of options are available. Tung oil, BLO, and Fairtrimmers are all popular. I've used Fairtrimmers in the past, and was pleased with the results. A nice coat of wax like Tom's 1/3 will help out too, when you're done.

If you go to the CMP program website, they can link you to a rather extensive article on stock refinishing. I printed it out, and lost it.
The go through multiple forms of stock refinishing, and mention the pros and cons of each. Tung oil had its good, and bad points. The stock refinisher in the article suggested that a miniwax refinishing was best for most people. It was a certain miniwax treatment, since they have many different types. The refinisher was looking at esthetics, durability, and repairability.
If I were redoing a stock, I think his advice would be very helpful!
