Low-numbered Springfield action now sporterized, it's at best only worth about half of that $650, and then only as a wall-hangar. CMP doesn't allow any low-numbered rifles anywhere near their Springfield and military rifle events, even slinging "only" ball ammo. I personally know of 1 low-number Rock Island that occasionally gets fired with gallery loads, and I'm not particularly thrilled by the knowledge.

Now I do have to comment, that's the second low-number Springfield in .22-250 I've heard/seen of in the last couple of months. There must be something going around.

Folks that had these made during the golden years of military rifle sporterization are probably dying off or selling off their collections. Depending on who you believe, there is also a decline or at least stagnation in those who hunt. Last, but not least, discount level rifles like the Axis, Ruger American, etc. offer good if not outstanding accuracy compared with military sporters at about the same price. Then, there is the whole low numbers thing that depresses values for knowledgeable consumers.

I just found something interesting by reading some of Hatcher's Notebook. He stated that the double heat treated receivers and bolts were actually stronger than the later nickel steel ones. I knew they were smoother, but it was reassuring to read that they are stronger. That is in no way taking into account for a 100 year rifle, but I may have to put some rounds downrange to celebrate her 100th birthday.

Yeah I decided not to worry about it. Maybe I'll find something similar later. I don't feel like chancing anything even for a fair price
