Okay, I have a NM M1A with a SA 4-14 scope on it for long range, but I wanted something of a utility carbine, one that would be sort of generl purpose (maybe even hunting). I have jsut heard so many questionable thigns aobut SA products lately taht I am not sure whether I want to sink 1200 buks into one. I was looking at G3 clones with integral picatinny mounts on their receivers and I could get one for less than 500.

Advice? I already have M1A GI mags, with more on the way, but G3 mags are absurdly cheap. Anyone have experinece with either?

There are a couple of options available for you. But I would definitly stay away from the G3 clones with the aluminum receivers and the integral rail.

If you really want a G3 see if you could find a clone somewhere built on a genuine FMP Portuguese receiver or a Greek receivered Springfield SAR-3/8. For $1200 you could find a very nice SAR-3.

You could also buy a used M1A with all USGI parts if that would ease your worries. If accuracy is paramount, I would stay with the M1A. If you like variety, go with a SAR-3/8 and give your M1A a sister. The Springfield SAR-3 is a pre ban and the SAR-8 is a post ban, the preban will cost a little more. There is also an SAR-8 that was built on the Aluminum receivers that you should stay away from.

The only variation of a carbine in a G3 is the G3K which is a custom gun and would cost you more. The FAL is easier found in the carbine configuration, mags are also cheap but that is another story. The choice is yours.
