I got my eye on a original M1A1 carbine. I am wondering what the length is when the gun is folded? Also can the gun be fired folded?

The reason i ask is due to Michigan stooped under 30 inches when folded its a pistol and under 27 Inches folded (I think) its a short barrel rifle and illegal in Michigan. Same law i had to register my folding AK's as pistols here.

Not sure if the M1A1 carbine would be illegal its under 27". Maybe there a exception.

If anyone has knowledge on this i would appreciate it. Would like to know before i spend the money on a original M1A1

The M1A1 Carbine has to be registered as a pistol in Michigan.

It is between 26" and 30" folded and can be fired when folded.

It's not illegal, it just has be registere as a pistol.

It's a pain, I know.

Its a pistol in Michigan law eyes. Just like Yugo folding AK and my folding stock Mossburg 500 are pistols.

I was just wondering i had read somewhere the M1A1 was 25.5 folded.

It their stupid law. Of course, once you register it & get a carry permit, you can carry it concealed.

How is it a pistol?

Back in the 30's our biased legislators in their infinite wisdom, decided if it is under 30 in (or 26 in whatever the convoluted thing is) it is a "pistol" and you need the purchase permit, or a CCW, the idiocy of this is massive, and as far as I know there is no attempt to change it.

26" is the federal law, and the M1A1 is 25 7/8" folded. It was eximped sometime in the 1950's.

It is not a pistol or SBR under federal law.

Yes it can be fired folded.

Good question Flyboy73...now I'm wondering what the law is here in IN....I have a MAK-90. If I put a folding stock on it, it will make it around 27"....wonder if it would be considered a pistol in IN ? I already have a handgun permit, but wonder if I would have to register it? Have never heard of this before....?

A dealer today told me an showed me a Carbine with folding stock, here in IN...Legal here because barrel is over 16" an folding stock its over the 26"....I didn't know other states saw them as pistols.....that needed permits an registration...
