mag tube spring length

any guidelines on how long to cut a mag tube spring? I have an Ithaca Mod 37 DS Police Special, I ordered a replacement from Wolff and was wondering how long I need to cut it down to.
A few inches longer than the old one?

Why cut it down? Try it first....

The springs on my extended mag guns are considerably longer the the mag tube (in their relaxed state)----and work just fine.

Ok, I'll see what it looks like first, I was just wondering because Wolff said they came long and need to be trimmed to length.
