A magazine is a pretty good defense weapon if nothing else can be used. I don't mean a "cartridge feeding device", I mean a reading type magazine.
The big magazines, like the old Life or Look were better, but even the smaller ones will do. Take a thick Time or Newspeak and roll it as tightly as you can, stapled edge in. It can deflect a knife, and jabbed into an attacker's solar plexus, throat, or other sensitive areas, it can do serious damage or at least may allow time to get away.
And no jurisdiction calls a magazine a deadly or dangerous weapon, or prohibits carrying one. We have freedom of the press.
