Magazine

A magazine is a pretty good defense weapon if nothing else can be used. I don't mean a "cartridge feeding device", I mean a reading type magazine.

The big magazines, like the old Life or Look were better, but even the smaller ones will do. Take a thick Time or Newspeak and roll it as tightly as you can, stapled edge in. It can deflect a knife, and jabbed into an attacker's solar plexus, throat, or other sensitive areas, it can do serious damage or at least may allow time to get away.

And no jurisdiction calls a magazine a deadly or dangerous weapon, or prohibits carrying one. We have freedom of the press.

This technique was taught to OSS operatives during WWII, and probably has been used by intelligence agencies since. I think I read that a strike into the solar plexus was recommended.

Story to tell. My wife and I were in NYC visiting her sister and decided to take a walk around the neighborhood. We were near Rockefeller Center and decided to swing by to see the landmark. As we got closer, we noticed the population density increasing rapidly, to the point that, by the time we reached the center, we were hemmed in with probably 50K other people and packed in like cattle. This happened in a matter of minutes.

As luck would have it, we had arrived at Rockefeller Center just in time for the Christmas tree lighting ceremony... Now I'm not a small fella, but my wife is a diminutive 5'2" and highly claustrophobic. Panic began to set in and in spite of my size, people were just not responding to "excuse me" combined with my best "eat lightning, crap thunder" face. Our salvation was a rolled up magazine I had purchased an hour earlier on our walk and authoritative pokes to the kidneys of the people who would not move. A path emerged and in about 15 minutes we were clear of the crowd.

Since then, I've always carried a 1982 Life Magazine in an Alessi Ankle holster for any similar occassion...

Permit Shmermit! My '82 Pre-ban LM has the glossy cover and triple rubberized roll retention devices. They can pry it from my cold dead hands before I ask anyone for their permission to carry it... (by the way, I got it on subscription, so I beat the newsstand price by at least 50%)

Remind me to tell you about the time when I was cleaning it and it went off...
