I have just purchased a Smith 5906 pistol. I am awaiting shipment, however it only comes with a single 15 round magazine.

It looks like additional magazines I have seen run around 30$. Does anyone have any advice on the best place to get additional magazines for a more reasonable price? Are there any magazine brands that I should stay away from?

Thanks.

Thanks for the link. I have seen that some after market mags are good and some bad. I don't buy many pistol magazines, and did not want to get something that wasn't reliable.

I just did a THR search on mec-gar and they seem to get good reviews.

Put your mind to rest about the quality of MecGar magazines.

MecGar in fact IS the manufacturer of "factory" magazines for many firearms companies, one of which is Walther.

I've never read a single complaint from anyone who bought a MecGar magazine, and they are of such quality I don't even consider them "aftermarket"....

I've owned firearms for over 50 years and FOR ME there are only two types of magazines I will use in my firearms.. Factory and MecGar..

As to the availability of mags for your 5906? I bought a NIB 5906 from CDNN several months ago and at that time they had plenty of new 5906 mags for sale at $30.00. A short time later when I wanted some more 5906 mags to use in my 6906 they were out of new mags, but had used for $20.00. I bought three of those, but I recommend you buy new mags when you can. I replaced the mag springs/followers w/new followers/springs on the used mags and by the time I was through I could have just bought new mags in the first place.

Of course if the supply of new mags runs out, buy used and replace the springs as I did..

Recently I bought an extra new CS45 mag from Brownell's, or Midway (I forget which), so there's another source of SW mags for you to check.

Congratulations on the 5906... Fine weapon, and equipped with CT Lasergrips I use mine for home defense.

Best Wishes,

Jesse

I have a few factory ones, a Mec-Gar Clinton mag and a promag. I never carry the Promag around but I use it a lot for plinking and ive only had on FTF out of 250 rounds though it. I don't now but I also have a promag 30 rounder for my 10/22 and if easily put 2-3k rounds though it and it still is the only 30 rd mag that works well in my 10/22. That said id never trust Promag with my life. There cheap and ya..... but I carry the Mecgar all the time and would defiantly buy another.

S&W 5906 is a awesome gun.

I carry JHP in the 5906, and FMJ in the sigma. Good combo, amazing guns.

We carry the 659 and 5906 and many are still in service. I would not allow anything other than the factory S&W magazine. The aftermarket magazines did not function to the same level as the aftermarket and that could not be tolerated in a firearm used on duty.

Mecgar were not in the picture back then and although I've never used a branded one, I'm sure the factory Sig magazines were manufactured by them.

$30.00 is a decent price for top quality magazines. Cheaper ones are not worth the cost and unreliability.

Thanks for the detailed responsesand sharing your experience. I am sure it has saved me some headaches. I knew there were brands to stay away from, and those that were good.

Sounds like I need either legit S&W or Mec-Gar. Will be placing an order tomorrow.

I have read many great things about the 3rd gen Smiths and when I saw the LE trade ins for a reasonable price at Summitgunbroker I went ahead and bought one. However, since it only came with one mag, I wanted to pick up several others.

3rd gen S&Ws are the best gun for the money you can get these days. You wont be disappointed.

JubJub,

Thanks for the tip, I didn't even think to ask. The gun I bought was from summitgunbroker and when I called today to arrange payment and shipping I asked if he had extra magazines.

He did, and they were 18 buck each, so I had him throw several extras in with the pistol.

Problem solved.

Thanks again,

Bob
