Anyone hunt deer up in Jackman? Typically my group hunts northern New Hampshire but due to the EXCESSIVE number of hunters the past few years we’re thinking about swinging into Maine. Just wondering what to expect in Jackman, I keep reading about their massive winter kill during the 08-09 season & it does seem somewhat like a hunting destination so I’m not sure how many guys are up there. Available lodging goes hand in hand with more hunters so I get that.
We considered the allagash but up there it seems like it’s outfitter central, all the lodging is real expensive and usually comes with food or guide services both of which I don’t want. Usually we go up for 10-12 days so that would get expensive quick.
Any other area’s you’d suggest so we can make our first trip to Maine a success? We checked out the Millonocket area briefly too. The “chain of ponds” area long the NH border is also appealing but there’s no lodging down in there, one camp bosebuck mountain but they’re expensive and more of a guide service.
One MUST is access to logging roads, which I’m told Jackman has that access.
