Greeting new friends,

I came across some discussions here similar to what I have found in dads closet. They were too old and the pics are gone. Anyway maybe y’all can help.

I am inheriting two shotguns. One is marked MANTON. The other has engraving not marks. The MANTON is the one with the duck on it.

the barrels are off the guns. There are proof marks there. I left them at dads so these pics are as good as it gets for now. I’m not 100% which is which. I have learned a little since I took these pics.

I’ve been told they’re worthless, I was going wall hang them at best, at worst clean them and then wall hang them. lol.

thanks.

Joseph Manton was one of the highest regarded British gunmakers of his day. He made about 100 guns a year. At one point both James Purdey and William Greener worked for him.

Because of his success, a lot of lesser known continental gunmakers (mainly in Belgium, IIRC) emulated his work, and stamped MANTON on their barrels in hopes of selling their wares for more than they were worth to an unsuspecting rube.

Based on the fit and engravings of your piece, I would bet that it is one of these knock-offs. You can possibly verify this by finding where the proof marks are from.

As to value, they are obviously beyond shootable, so their value relies in their decorative attributes.

ETA: Manton was known for his flintlock pieces; he was active before the percussion break-through. OP, your piece appears to have been born with a percussion lock.
