March 2019 rimfire 10 shot challenge

The debate on old vs new rifles, or what is a true competition .22 rifle could start a long thread, based on what you told me I don't think it is class 5. I doesn't have a heavy match barrel, I'm guessing it wasn't tuned up by a specialist , and diopter sights I don't see a overly huge advantage based on having used them before.

If it was something like the competition grade custom shop Ruger 10/22 I might lean toward saying class 5 but my decision is yours is not class 5.

OK, thanks - I just didn't want an unfair advantage.....

Two competitors so far? Might have to make it March to June and rename it "Spring 2019 Rimfire Challenge" :D.

All mine are Class 1 standing, no sling, no peeps just factory buckhorns. Listed from worst to best. Ran out of CCI (my favorite) and shot what I had on hand- that's no excuse by the way, CCI can't help my vision :D.

20190311_162258.jpg 20190311_170601.jpg 20190311_170549.jpg My favorite 22. I love the Mauser style safety and the way it feeds each round. My sweet little old Mom just randomly gave it to me one day. Which struck me as odd because she'll fight to the death to keep her collection of older Remington's and FN Brownings.

Class 1
Score: 74
Rifle: Remington 512
Ammo: Winchester Wildcat 40gr

20190311_162315.jpg 20190311_153436.jpg My Grandpa left this one in his will to my son. I'm afraid it's too dangerous for him to own at age 8. Not because he's too young (He owns 22s and a Mauser 98k) but because the trigger pull is about 8 ounces.

So 74 was my best. Trigger pull was a definite factor. The Marlin 60 I feel could do much better but that square post messed me up. The bead posts on the bolts completely covered the black circle at 50 yards, so tricky as well.

To the guy who felt 91 and 93 wasn't good enough to post, not sure of the class, you may have inadvertently discouraged others to post thier scores. Post what you got.

Edit: Double negative fix.

I believe the Win 52 is a peer to the Mosberg M44 and M144, and I can't remember the Rem rifle. Good competition guns of thier period, but not an Anschutz based on mod 54 action. Maybe that's the answer, anything on the Anschutz 54 action is cat 5?
The Winchester 52 is a couple cuts above a Mossberg 44 or 144. It is probably in the league of Remington 40x which, along with custom versions is the basis of bench rest shooting. I would say that would be a competition rifle but that is only an opinion. I think you have to use some judgement. I think the 44 and 144 Mossbergs would be in the class with Kimber 82, and Remington 540 XR. Club type rifles. I am not sure how all the other factory target rifles fit in. I am anxious to see how my 540XR compares to my CZ American, but the range is not open yet.

Great job Minnesota Fats. I am West of the Metro area. If you are not too far maybe we could meet up.

Great job Minnesota Fats.
Im not sure it is, this is my first time in a competition like this and I'm the only class 1 so I have no comparisons. Lions revolver challenge has filled up fast. This 22lr rifle challenge has died fast. I'd have thought the opposite.

I've signed up for both the handgun and rimfire matches but life keeps getting in the way of getting to the range. Tentatively, I have Wed marked on the calendar to do both.....I'll be class 1 also, all I have is irons and 3

You are correct, but all 4 were contemporaneous; I couldn't remember the Rem model, but I do know the Mossbergs did compete effectively, if not often with them.

50 yards offhand is tough. If you watch the biathalon competition, you will see the best trained, best equipped and very practiced shooters sometimes miss. Of course they are under great stress as well. Don't worry about what some guys targets look like. I think yours are the only offhand standard sporter shots.

Good to know.

Thanks for the info. I had a 44 US. I wasn't impressed but it had issues and I did not know what I was doing back then. I would like another shot at it, pun intended. But that rifle is long gone.

Lets see; If you watch the postal competition, you will see the trained (at least in our minds), modestly equipped and not very well practiced shooters miss, sometimes mor, sometimes not...meaning ME, others mileage may vary...........

The CC challenge and Smallbore challenges that Lion is running have caused me to get off my butt and get my stuff ready in anticipation of range days. Now if I can make it past 10 PM the night before without any plan changing phone calls......

I have a 44US; reworked the trigger now about 6-10 oz. Wrote an article for another forum on smoothing and lightening the trigger for a 44 US. Changed front sight from post to Lyman ?? (Can't remember, been 15 yrs ago) with removable inserts. Shoots very well. Bought one from CMP years ago ($75 ea) for my son-in-law and grandson. My grandson completed the NRA qualifications and competed against with it before moving on to 4H shotgun.

I second that notion. Except that I didn't see the handgun match, but life does keep getting in the way! This weekend is shot (HA! Well, I guess no shooting this weekend, actually), as are the first two of April (although one of the April weekends is a Steel Challenge shoot, so I might be able to sneak something else in too). So... Maybe, just maybe, March 30! Hopeful anyway.

Dear Mr. Fats: The rifle I have the worst regrets over ever letting go was a 512 X. You are not making me feel any better.

Crickets...

I am sure it will pick up, smart move to request it go to end of April. Been getting over a flu that effects lasted two weeks, also recently lost a lifetime friend, and just haven't had time or motivation to get out but I will, just been feeling down on all ways for now.

No pics of the gun sorry, due to the crap going on at the moment.
Lets just say it starts with "R" and rhymes with "Ruger 10/22, 12" barrel, supressor, stock trigger polished, barrel fully floated" 3-9x40 cheapy scope.

Aguila Super Extra 40gr doing aprox 1075 fps.

Class2 (Standing with optic): 70, 1X
Class3 (Bipod, optic, sitting-ish, wet grass, wet ass!): 89, 2X
Class4: (100y, optic, bipod, leaning on ute): 69, 2X

My excuses are: the trigger is shyt; I don't have my glasses ( it was a struggle to keep the crosshairs in focus, shooting at 100y I was using one dot down as aim point which pretty well obscured the target, and I can't even see my shots on in the black at either distance); several FTF/FTE; I only had one coffee.

But quite honestly that's pretty well as good as this unknowable "R" gun shoots. When I get my glasses I'll do it over irons with a "W" gun.

Hmmmm. Shot a 99-4X in Class 3 today (Different gun). Kicking myself for that 9.
Might try and do better tomorrow. Geez this is a good way to burn through ammo. :D

Absolutely hopeless standing with irons so not going to bother posting that!

What is the meaning of X counts as 10 points? Is that an extra 10 points over the 10 points it scores for being in the 10 ring?

No, the "X-ring" and the "10-ring" are both then points, but you record the number of "X-ring" hits, in case of a tie. In that case, the number of "X-ring" hits is the tiebreak.

:D.

This, it is not just about winning, it's about challenging yourself, getting out of your comfort zone a bit, learning something new and what you may improve on, IT'S ABOUT FUN, and getting together to see what's what on how guns and ammo perform. This thread will give a more accurate idea of what is typical of hitting wise even though you are going to post your best group or score for the challenge and hopefully inspire you to try different things if you don't already and inspire to improve.

Got a memorial for a friend this weekend so in one or two weeks I should have my entries posted, last weekend I finally started sighting in the Marlin 60 I bought 15 years ago and have barely shot because this challenge has inspired me to get it together. Look forward to trying my Remington 581 offhand also which I haven't done in a long time.

post it, believe me if I do not good or so so I'll post it as should others. Posting what you have is being real, and besides a member might see something in your group or score that could help to give advice on getting better you never know.
