March 2019 single action "old west" revolver 10 shot challenge

I shot the 9mm Blackhawk today. My plan was to shoot some orphan ammo off the shelf and call it a day. If now someone tells me their 9mm Ruger Blackhawk shoots great or shoots awful, I will believe them. The first ammo I shot I was planning to get a quick zero on the gun and shoot a target. It was all over the place and at best an 80. I either forgot how to shoot or the revolver just hates that load. I then found a partial box of 115 Penn cast SWC rounds that must have been there a while because they were loaded with WSF and I since switched to Power Pistol in 9mm as it tests more accurate. In any case, at 15 yards they went where aimed and it was my fault when it missed.

Class 1; 15 yards, iron sights
Score: 94-2X
Date: 4/1/2019
Ruger Blackhawk-9mm cylinder
115 Penn SWC with WSF

There have been a couple times I managed 6 holes touching each other with the 9mm cylinder at 15yds, but that is the best of not "all day long". It was also outdoors. When I used the indoor range for my entry the low light made a different for me for the worse, and I actually did better "group wise" but higher with .357 mag but since mine is hitting more center for now I'm keeping it set for 9mm. Got to say Garrett's Blackhawk .40/10mm is interesting I have never shot a 10mm of any type. My next Blackhawk though will be either a .45Colt convertible or .30 carbine because a .30 carbine just seems cool to have. Hope someone enters one in this contest.

For the black powder which I have no experience with, I honestly thought they typically wouldn't be as accurate as a cartridge gun but I'm seeing they can be based on entries.

well, I have a 45 convertible packed up to go to the range in the AM - assuming I don't get blindsided by anything......

Interesting. Unless I missed one, I don’t see any Class 3 entries. Nobody has a scoped single action revolver? (I don’t).

Is it a bad thing that I wandered through a couple of gun stores looking for a Blackhawk Hunter to use for this? Seems like as good an excuse as any.

I don't have one either - Santa is mad at me for some reason..... :uhoh:

It’s probably just as well I didn’t find one. I recently bought myself a .44 for my 44th birthday.

But it wasn’t a revolver.

Maybe we’ll have a “magnum handgun” challenge at some point (hint, hint). I think I have more magnum semi autos and single shots than I do revolvers.

I don't have any magnum semi autos, but I do have a good selection of TC Contenders.....

In case someone brings out a scoped gun didn't want them mixing it with the iron sights so I made that class.

Well, I just tested a new load at 15 yards, and thought I’d throw it up here since it kind of fits in. I never buy paper targets since I live in the woods and just use whatever I have laying around. First 5 shots with this load.

6” paper plate
Standing, unsupported 2 handed at 15 yards.

Taylor Drifter in 357 magnum.
Ammo:
38 special hand load
158 grain lead SWC
3.4 grains of bullseye

That first flyer was me. First one with a new load is always a flyer. Guess I don’t fully trust the first shot with a new load.

Might have to actually buy one of those targets and have a go with this load.

greetings,

finally got to the range today - took my Buckeye Sports .32 convertible
first up was the 32-20

second was the 32 H&R mag

finally the Ruger

I dropped the ball on the very last shot - that 12 oz trigger got me - threw that round way over the top of the paper.... :(

greetings,

got back out again this AM with my Ruger 45 old model convertible
first (and best of this trip) was the 45 ACP with a score of 78

next came the 45 Colt, but I dropped the ball here - one out of the rings and one completely off the paper :fire:

finally, the old warhorse - my home built Ruger
it wasn't a convert when I bought it, but I found an ACP cylinder that just happened to fit :)

I ran upstairs this evening and grabbed my old .357 blackhawk and 10 reloads to fire this target in the waning light of April 8th.

Ruger Blackhawk .357 mag
4 5/8 bbl
Presentation grips.
158 gr cast tumble lube over 6.4gr Unique

I was a little disappointed at first with my performance, because this is my old 'go-to' revolver. It is the mate to my .357 carbine. I havent shot in in a while, so all things considered I'm not too ashamed of an 81x, but the gun is capable of better with a better pilot.
Here is a closer look at the target......:

Thanks lionking!

Some members on the .454 thread need to bring it on over to this thread lol;)

Tried out one of my Pietta 1860 Armys and my Uberti Walker.

1860
2 hands
30 grains 2f Goex, Remington #10 caps, ESS wintergreen felt wads, Horn. .454 RB
Class 1 87-2x
Class 1 one handed 70

Uberti 1847 Walker
Same as above but 40 grains 2f
Class one two handed 88-1x

The first 5 shot target is my first 5 with one hand at 15 with the army. Couldn't hold that tight for the next 5.

The other one is the first 5 shots out of the Walker offhand when trying to determine where it printed.
