Okay I finally got an aperture sight for my new Marlin. I Bought the Williams
5-d, because I couldn't bear the thought of a scope on it. I got the one
that mounts to the two rear scope holes. I actually hangs over the rear of
the reciever so much I had to install the offset spur on the hammer, is that
normal? Did I get the right size? it said it was for marlin centerfires. Also
to anyone who uses a peep, what kind of accuracy can I expect from this
set up? Also does any one have any data on S&B 158 Jsp's do out of
an 18 inch barrel?
Thanks in advance.

Yes, you got the correct site. I have the same on my 1894 and had to install the offset spur as well.

Accuracy is up to you and how well your eyes respond to the peep sight. Accuracy wise, I shoot the same as when using the stock sight, however, it is much easier for me to acquire the target with the peep. One nice bonus with the Williams is you can buy different size apertures to use under different conditions (although the standard one has worked fine for me). Williams also makes replacement front sights as well.

Take it out and see how you do with. I like it on mine and consider the Williams sight money will spent.

Oh...by the way. Nothing wrong with scoping your 1984 either. There are plenty of lever actions out there with scopes. There is a company that makes a scope base that extends past the receiver and over the barrel. I have been toying with the idea of mounting a low power long eye relief scope "scout style". IMO, that would make a nice setup.

Can't help with the ammo question. All I can tell you is you will see a notable increase in velocity over a revolver.

Enjoy the Marlin. It is truly a fun rifle to shoot.

I just installed a 5D on a 336 yesterday, and yes, the hammer extension is helpful. I used locktite on the threads holding the sight to the receiver, but I have a question for others who have this sight:

Do the windage adjustment screws hold, or do they loosen up and change impact over time? Reason I ask is due to the fact that the screw heads are so shallow that you cannot turn them with anything stronger than a thin knife blade. As a result, there is almost no torque on them, and I don't know if they will loosen up.

The site has has not become loose yet (base or adjustment screws).

So far....

But I have only shot a 100 rds since installing the sight.

I've got a Marlin 1894SS. I had the same problem with the sight hanging off the back of the receiver. It seemed to be in the way of the hammer and the safety. I mounted it in the front holes in the receiver. Now it's not in the way at all. Works great. I also got a fiber optic front sight. I can see the front sight much better. These sights are a set from Williams.

Well.....check that out.

I just moved my sight to the front holes. Sight picture is, for the most part unchanged. The spur is gone and looks a lot cleaner too.

All this time I kept looking at and thinking "what is wrong with this picture" and fix was there all along. It is so obvious you would think the sight was meant to be mounted in the front holes.

Looks like my IQ dropped a few points :banghead:

Thanks for the tip!

I believe these sights are made for rifles with a bigger receiver like 30-30. But they will work on rifles made with shorter receivers in revolver calibers (357-44-45).
Glad this helped.

Check out this site.

http://www.speer-bullets.com/

Go to reloading then reloading data then check out the data for 357 170gr. Not 158gr. but might give you an idea.

Hope this helps

As I mentioned above, I just installed a 5D on a 336. Took it to the range today, and the lowest I could get it was 8" high at 50 yards. Even shooting at the 200 yard gong I was still high.

As a result, I am going to need a higher front sight. Any suggestions?

With a 5d you need to have a new front sight and if you look in the Williams catalog or at Brownells to find out what height you need.

That is why I recommend the Marble's tang sight.

I looked in the Brownells catalog, and it appears that I need a .312 sight if I use a Wiliams base. However, it doesn't tell me what height I need if I utilize the existing Marlin base, and the Brownells catalog doesn't seem to show a Williams base for a 336. Should I go with a .343? , or does anyone have another suggestion?

Try calling Williams. Their phone number is 1-800-530-9028. I like the fiber optic front sights. You might want to check them out.
