I have an older (70's model) 336 in .35 cal. which has just developed a problem with the loading gate. Spring tension is just about gone. While this is an older gun, I know it's history and it hasn't been shot much. The same thing happened to my other 336 in .30-30. I paid a smith $25. to fix it. I don't remember for sure but I think the spring came loose.

Anyone know how to fix it?

That loading gate is its own spring, so if the tension is gone, the gate has to be replaced. But before you do, look at the right side of the receiver behind the gate and you will see a screw that holds the gate in and keeps tension on the spring.

Make sure that screw is tight, as they sometimes vibrate loose and then the gate loses tension.

Thank's Jim. The screw was loose. Several months ago when I gave it to my son I told him that he had to keep the screws tight on a marlin and he told me they were. Cept for one.
