I'm thinking about getting a truck gun, I figured the marlin would be cheap effective and not on a ban list (I don't want to lose something that I could never replace). Do you guys think that this would make a good truck gun or do you have any other guns you'd recomend instead?

Since Ill is a non-carry state, I can legally keep a weapon nearby by having a truck-gun. I suppose I have been as satisfied with my .30-30 as anything I have tried. I have a rotation, based on what I think I may be shooting at.
Of all the potential uses.....I most often:
1. just plink for fun.
2. try to shoot a coyote
3. I hate skunks
4. defensive weapon.
5, put a wounded or sick animal down.

Although I often carry a .357 revolver, a .30-30 meets my needs quite well.

Ive thought about this for a long time and reached the same conclusion as you. I keep my out on the used racks for a good deal.

I think one would be among my top choices, but they ain't exactly cheap anymore.

A Remington 7600 pump would actually be a better choice in many ways, particularly the carbine. They actually weigh about the same, could be kept unloaded and loaded up fast with a few mags available. They are more accurate, available in better chamberings and more reliable. I wish someone would make a reliable 10 round mag to meet any possible AWB requirements. If this law happens I suspect someone will.

As for the 336 as a truck gun, I say go for it as I love mine and it serves as my house gun for any possible SHTF scenarios (reality based things like hurricanes and the such).

They are cheap in my area I just bought one for $250 at a local pawnshop a few hours ago, I see them at gunshows all the time for $300-$350.

YES!

Good choice.

Over the years the 336 is the gun I most regret selling and #1 on my list to replace.

A Marlin 336 is a delight in any caliber. Go for it. But I hope we don't just accept the obnoxious idea of an oppressive gun ban and switch to rifles we think will be excluded. If we allow this to happen, they will come for ALL guns soon enough.

:banghead:

I've kept a levergun in the truck forever along with a .22 rifle. I'm looking for a cheeeeep single shot shotgun also to round it out. :) The same reasons it's packed on a horse easily are the same reasons the levergun makes a good truck gun.

The Marlin would make an excellent truck gun. It would be even better if you lived in a state that allowed you to keep it loaded in the truck.

Matter of fact that's what I have used for the last 4 years.
1.Good potent carbine in 30-30
2.Easy to get in and out of truck in a hurry.
3.None threatening appearance to those that don't know any better.
4.FWIW it fits in with the Arizona culture
5. Comes back in the house with me at night.. comes with me when I leave in the morning.

Gscrasher I can keep it loaded in missouri I like pro gun states lol.

Etxhiker I was planning on this since October lol no ban whatever here I did get a great price because I waited until after deer season and then the ban thing happened so its a buyers market on old school guns right now.

Asia331 I also like the sheeple friendly factor it has lol

Sorry about that implication Ro1911. For some reason I thought you were from Ill! I must not have gotten past Springfield.

On another note, several times a year I travel from NM to IL and have to unload my CCW and put it in the trunk when I get to the Mississippi. :D
I like gun friendly and concealed carry friendly states.

Gscrasher yah our eastern neighbor is a big suck fest when it comes to guns, I haven't set foot in Illinois in years, I think I was three or four the last time I went there. And not to mention its the home state of that idiot that shot himself and posted it on YouTube lol.
