friends, a buddy of mine recently acquired a Marlin 336Y, and it looks to be unfired. I am helping him with it, and will be loading for it as well, so I too have a bunch of questions.
He wants to get a sling for it, preferably leather,. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good sling?
He bought it second hand, and it didn’t come with the hammer spur and wrench. Can I order this from Marlin, or perhaps Numrich?
He plans on installing a 2-7 red field revolution or Leupold scope. Does anyone have recommendations as to scope rings/mounts that will work well with this rifle?

Thanks in advance for all your help, and please share any other helpful ideas!

Questions 1&2 can be had on Amazon. Though I’m not a huge fan of leather slings. They slide too much. But they look way better than say “The Claw”. To stay true to Marlin for the hammer spur I’d check Midway or EBay. Question 3 depends on if he wants to use his irons. I don’t like see thru mounts. Can’t stand them actually. I believe I have DNZ mounts on at least two of my leverguns. And they are awesome. However any Weaver style mount will suffice. Height is going to depend on his cheek weld.

He is an old fart and needs to use a scope, so irons are there in case the scope fails, but probably don’t need to co-witness.

What BigBore said............And I can't stand see thru mounts either. My Marlin 30AS (economy version of a 336) ( AKA my woods rifle) has a Weaver style base with a set of "old school" standard Weaver rings (low ) which go nicely with a small Leupold 1-4x 20mm Vari- X II that, to my eye, goes perfect on a woods lever gun. For my use a maximum of 4 power is more than enough on a 30-30 in the woods ( I usually keep it on 2x) so I like the looks of the smaller scope on a lever gun. I hate seeing lever gun scopes mounted too high because of see thru's as it's awkward for the shooter with the scope that high IMHO. Here's what I consider a nice setup for a Marlin lever gun concerning mounting height and looks. The traditional old Weaver rings also IMG_1172.JPG just seem to look right on a traditional old lever gun.

Scopes do fail. But it’s very rare with quality optics. As for the “old fart” comment....I’m only 35 and don’t use irons at all. They’re never as consistent as a scope. They may be accurate enough. But never as accurate at distance. I’ve killed two pigs less that 15 yards at a dead sprint with my scoped leverguns in the last two weeks. Granted the scope was on 3x. But it can be done.

I’m also not sure you can cowitness a levergun with a true scope. Maybe I’m wrong on that though.

Here is your sling, not cheap, but a bargain for the quality you get. The rough leather does not slide off the shoulder.

A 2-7X32 scope would be my 2nd choice. I find a 1-4X20 much more usable on that type of rifle. The difference between 1X and 2X is dramatic when shooting fast and close. 4X is enough magnification for 300-400 yard shooting.

Any Weaver style ring and mount is fine, I like Burris, but you can get what you need at any Walmart.

In 40+ years of hunting and shooting I've never had a "quality" scope fail, I've had iron sights go out 2-3 times. I wouldn't worry about back up irons. And if irons are needed Weaver, or Weaver style rings come off in about 1 minute with a screwdriver on a multi-tool. Even the back of a knife can be used in an emergency.

My setup is almost the same as what he wants. Mine has over and under rings though. I have a 2-7x34 Redfield Revolution scope. I like it alot. My stepson has a 336 with rifleman rings and bases. I carries a 3-9x40 Redfield Revolution as well. Both guns are handy and make fine shooters.

If you can not find a Redfield Revolution scope, I strongly suggest a VX1.

Thanks so much for all your suggestions. What about the Leupold VX 2? Is it not better than the VX 1?

Yes, the VX2 is better than the VX1. I would go with that if the extra cost is not a factor. I tried to post a couple of pics, but it said the file size is to big. As for a sling I found one at a gun show it was $10. One other suggestion, he may want to invest in a happy trigger. The newer Marlin triggers can be pretty heavy.

The leupold vx1 3-9x40 is the best hunting scope under $200 I've ever had in my hands. It has a much wider field of view than the 2-7x32 so I do not see any advantage to the 2-7.

Most sporting goods stores will have a weaver base for a 336 in stock as well as a hammer spur. I like leupold rifleman bases. The comb height of the stock is meant for iron sights so the lowest mount that will clear the scope is probably the right height.

.......... Well said...... I wish I had stated that in my previous post about see thru rings being awkward for the shooter because the scope gets up there too high. Hence my dislike for the see thru's. My 1-4x is mounted as low as I could get it and it works well with that stock even though it could be just a tiny bit lower; although at 1x I can still see the top of the front sight through the scope. Check out that picture in my previous post for an idea of that height.

A warning about the 336Y: My brother has one and I believe they use standard sights on them but the height isn't right. We adjusted the front sight almost out of the dovetail to get it on target and ran out of vertical adjustment to get it with in a foot of POA.

I despise see through mounts and would rather have no scope than a scope mounted in them (I've seen way too many scopes knocked out of aim by them and I'm not that old). Check your open sights before you ever rely on them. There's a good chance they are off by many feet at 100 yards...

Folks, thanks so much for all your replies. My buddy decided in a dozen scope mount, and the Leupold 2-7 vx2 scope. Now I have got to figure out a load for him. Thanks so much, again, for all your help and suggestions!

I got an Uncle Mike's hammer extension from Midway. Has been very solid.

I use Leupould rings, bases, and scope for my Marlin 336CS. I can shoot quarter size groups all day and get bored with it.
