Gun Control Advocate Describes Fight With NRA

By LAURA A. MORRIS
Crimson Staff Writer

Sarah Brady shared war stories from her nearly two-decade struggle for tougher gun control legislation with a small crowd at the John F. Kennedy, Jr. Forum last night.

Brady told the audience of her push in the late 1980s for a ban on so-called “plastic guns,†which metal detectors can’t catch.

A certain representative from Wyoming by the name of Dick Cheney did not return her calls, she said, adding that she’s not surprised to hear that he is currently in an “undisclosed location†now.

“I think he’s still hiding from us,†she said. “We’ve got to tell him to come out of hiding, we got the votes, plastic guns were banned.â€

Brady has been a crusader for tougher gun control laws since the 1980s, when her husband Jim was critically wounded in a failed assassination attempt on President Reagan. Brady has worked successfully to lobby for legislation such as the Brady Bill—named for her husband—and the Assault Weapons Ban.

Director of the Institute of Politics Dan Glickman introduced Brady as a powerful proponent of gun control who fights with “an ammunition of reason, statistics, and compelling personal narratives.â€

“If you look in the dictionary under the word ‘tenacious,’ you would find Sarah Brady’s picture,†Glickman said.

Her victories over the National Rifle Association (NRA) are like “David over Goliath,†Brady said, since gun control advocacy groups do not have the same financial war chest that the NRA has.

She praised events such as the Million Mom March, which she said draw national attention to gun control. She also asked the crowd to visit the website www.nrablacklist.com, an anti-NRA web page that highlights the NRA’s so-called “blacklist†of gun control supporters.

“I know why my husband Jim and I made their list, but we still don’t understand where Britney Spears came from,†she quipped.

Brady emphasized the importance of finding support for gun control on both sides of the political aisle.

“I listen to Rush Limbaugh and Dr. Laura every afternoon just to know what the other side believes,†Brady said. “We just need to maintain a reasonable, common sense tone to gain bipartisan support.â€

Elizabeth Goldschmidt ’06 asked Brady how she would dictate firearms policy if legislation was left to her discretion.

In response, Brady said she wouldn’t ban personal gun ownership, but instead would impose the most vigorous background checks possible and require owners to complete a rigorous firearms safety training course.

“Her message was inspirational,†Daniel Mejia ’07 said. “I liked how she appealed to the middle by making clear that she doesnâ€t want to take away the right to own a gun.â€
Yeah, and the spider just wants to sit and talk in his parlor.

Translation: In response, Brady said that she doesn't want to immediately ban personal gun ownership, she just wanted to erect formidable barriers to gun ownership, while at the same time create the mechanism with which to administratively deny gun ownership at will.

Gee, said the mindless one from the class of 07, "I'm really dumb, and bought it hook line and sinker"

"The Assault Weapons Ban will expire next year unless Congress and President Bush renew it. The NRA is using its muscle to block legislation that will renew the law. If the NRA gets its way, police officers on your streets will soon be outgunned by fast, efficient, people-killing machines like AK-47s and Uzis that have been banned for a decade. "

Sure, you can own guns... o, but not those guns... those guns are especially icky... and you can't take them out of your safe either. All guns are icky in public.

Good thing, too. Whew!

Wait a sec - they never existed, so how could they be banned? That's like banning unicorns. OK, ban it if you want to, but what a colossal waste of time.

Here's my email to the people at www.nrablacklist.com :

Thank you for linking me to the anti-gun supporters, so I can boycott these anti-freedom people!!! Knowledge is power!

Here in the midwest little old ladies hate handgun's, and don't care for the conceal to carry. Some senior citizen feel that handgun's are used by the bad man and only the bad man. Hard headed is an understatement. Last week I spoke to my grand ma about the CCW law's, and why the people of Kansas need to support CCW law's. She feel's that if people start to carry gun's that crime will go up. So I had to let her know, to get the right to carry a handgun you have to a clean record. I let her know a little bit about our handgun law's as it is now. If I were to take my handgun outside, into my own backyard cause I saw this person with a knife, gun, bat, or whatever. Given my love one's ZH!T, and need to kill this SOB. Im the one that just might get the jail time, because outside is public property.Grand ma now think's we should have right to carry on our own land here in the city.

Somehow I think the phrase "gun control advocate" is insufficiently descriptive. I like the phrase "self serving political opportunist" better.

She appealed to the middle by making clear that she doesn't want to take away the right to own a gun.

Did you notice -- it said she spoke to a SMALL crowd. How many? Half a dozen or so? You can tell it is getting close to election time when Sarah Brady and the Democrats move to the middle.

Her life's work has been to fight the NRA and she wants us to be able to own guns. I don't belive her:(
