Match Primers Vs. Standard

There was a story in one of the retail trade magazines concerning this topic a few years ago. They did an interview with Federal concerning Match Primers. They take a little more care with the inspection process and only the most senior and experienced people on the primer line work on the Match Primers.
Other than that, there is no difference, at least at Federal.

The other thread is discussing Benchrest Primers. Match Primers are another animal. My post is concerning the Federal Gold Medal Match Primers, which the story I referenced was about.

I am confused now Fred. The "Benchrest" primers we used to use from Federal were "Gold Medal Match" They never said anything about Benchrest on them.

at this point I'm considering paying for 'match' sp primers.
I've bought some mag sp's at a decent price to trade to fellas that load 'big boomer' .357 for sp's.
but match is looking better all the time, they are available. extra $$ though.

They're the same thing as far as I'm concerned. Just labled different as the names are from two different companies. Federal doesn't call their small pistol primers 500 as does CCI, so why would they use the same name on primers of supposedly better quality.

None of the component companies will go into much detail as to their manufacturing of primers, since they all consider it proprietary. The closest thing you'll find to an explanation is this from CCI:
CCI® BENCHREST RIFLE PRIMERS
In benchrest competition, there’s no such thing as a group that’s “too small.” Everything has to be tuned to the highest degree to produce match-winning results. That’s why we make CCI Benchrest primers. Only our most experienced skilled personnel put the priming mix in the cups, so you get the same flame, shot after shot. We also use specially selected cups and anvils for added consistency. An independent researcher identified the use of CCI Benchrest primers as one of two factors that were the most significant contributors to tiny groups. We can’t add much to that!
Remington also refers to their 7 1/2 primer as Benchrest, but offers no description of the process or component parts.
Federal refers to their Premium primers as Gold Medal Match, but does say that standard data should be used with them. Winchester doesn't make any distinction between their primers.
Minus a ballistics lab to do thorough testing, I guess it's up to each person to make up their own mind about what the differences are.

Do not use Remington 6 1/2 primers in a 223. Always use Remington 7 1/2 . See warning on Rem's website.
