mauser receiver sights

i have a czech 98/22 that has been sported, and the rear receiver bridge has been d&t w/ a .5" hole spacing in the rear. I want to run a receiver (peep) sight on the rifle.

my question is, will receiver sights designed for commercial mausers (fn specifically) fit this application, or is the bridge contour different?

fwiw, the bases i took off are by talley and fit the rifle just fine.

Williams & Lyman receiver sight bases mount on the side of the receiver, not the top.

Sounds like yours is D&T'ed for a scope base.

I had a wgrs from Williams on a commercial interarms. IIRC midway lists the hole spacing for this model but I'm prettysure it was .5

right, i want a true top-mount receiver sight like my marlin has, which is a williams.

i see that williams has the right hole spacing for my mauser, but is my military mauser contoured the same as the fn mauser, which is what they advertise it to fit?

Well look up the scope base part numbers for an interarms vs what was used on your Mauser

I'm pretty certain that the only difference between the rear bridge contour of a K98 Mauser & FN Mausers is the charger guide of the mitiary version. Most scope bases are listed as the same for each. This assumes the charger guide ground down to match the profile of the bridge on the K98.

you'll have to file off the charger hump for the williams wgrs sight to fit or you may be able to file the front of the sight to match the charger hump. the sight is only about $35 so it wouldn't cost much to try it out.
bobs gun parts also sells a sight that mounts to the top of the rear bridge. google bobs then look in the mauser section. its about $45

the charger hump has been gone a long time, now, so it isn't an issue.

I put a sight on a Swedish Mauser once that was designed for mounting to two holes in the top of the bridge. It was a "57" series, one of the major US sight makers but I don't remember if it was a Lyman, a Williams, or what. It had a curved mounting surface and hung the sight over the left side of the receiver like most receiver sights that mount to the side. It was several years ago, but I almost want to say that it WAS a Williams - I'm just not positive enough to say so.

I had to anneal the bridge surface in order to be able to drill the needed holes but a cobalt bit might have done it without the heat, but I'm not gonna' gaurantee it.

How's that for a wishy-washy post, eh?

The Lyman 57 is the model for M98 Mausers, if that helps?

I have a Ventage Lyman 57 SME on mine. It is steel while the new ones are made out of alloy I believe.... Scored it from a Estate sale.... for some pocket change. Really helps bring out the best of my rifle. Used to shoot way high at 100 yards through the battle sights. I now have it dialed in at 100 and have made pie plate shots out to 400 with just a few turns of the knob. BTW it is the SME that fits the Mauser! Model 57 is their type of sight not the type of rifle it fits on. they make lyman 57 for all types of rifles from lever actions to Japanese Ariskas to the best rifle on earth...... The one in your hands

That sounds familiar, and if it works on a 98 it ought to work on Mausers like the Swedish too.

Yeah, the WW1 rifles were battle sight zero'd at about 800 yards. They took long shots at each other from trench to trench in those days.
There used to be, and probably still are, taller front sights for Swedish Mausers to bring the zero down.
Even so, nothing beats a good peep sighted receiver sight, unless it's a tang sight on a lever action rifle..
