Medium .357 Magnum Loads (1st Post)

I will give another vote for BE-86. It has been the least position sensitive powder I have tried for mid-range 357 loads, and has been accurate as well. For really light loads, Trailboss.

For medium 357 magnum loads, I like using 12 gr. of 2400 with a 158 gr. SWC. It is manageable in a snubbie and easy in a k-frame. :)

I didn’t mean to snub anyone, and late happy Father’s Day to all.
We left for an extended weekend to Tennessee just after my post.
Time didn’t permit much surfing.

I was hoping someone could furnish real-time use info VihtaVuori powders for reduceduced load .357 Mag. Their loading guide data is for cowboy action shooting, with their warnings about position sensitivity and underload detonation. So without definitive information on these issues it’ becomes less acceptable.

Thank you for the comments on BE-86 and Longshot (with the greater charge variance).
I found the 34 pages of BE-86 - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/be-86.760289/.
I guess I have some reading before posting a semi-educated reply post.
The Lucky Gunner site https://www.luckygunner.com/labs/revolver-ballistics-test/ had quite a bit of info specifically on 158gr LSWC-HP/GC bullets and loads.

For just punching holes in paper we all use 148gr LWC flush with the top of a .38 Special case and 700X – a very mild load. I have a lot of that for my trap loads, so it’s very practical.

That works well, the first powder I bought more than a pound of was some 700X in a paper bag from an old timer. Worked great in .38 Spl & .44 Spl..

Looks like ArchAngelCD's post has the data you need.

Has anyone test fired the stated cartridge with 6-7 gr of N340?
I have, and I think you would find a good load with a standard pistol primer between 6-7gr of n-340. I've loaded 152-158 LSWC for a 2.75" Ruger security six with good results n-340 in the 6-7gr range should work well for you but my velocities would not be yours.
With a 6" 357 you may try 5.8 or 5.9 to start for your target velocity.

N340 and a 125 Gr jacketed shoots like a laser, but recoil is sharp.

Did not try it with 158s (IIRC)
