I'm in the process of turning an old metal cabinet into a gun cabinet. I decided I want to keep everything as modular as possible. I intend to use magnets (lights and foam) to attach various things. Lights and foam are easy. Its the organization that's the trick. My first thought was to build a wooden shelving unit but my time is precious so I decided to throw some money at it. I was thinking a metal wire shelf should fit the bill, but I'm open to other possibilities.

The space I have to work with is roughly 12"x24"x52", so ideally the shelving unit would be somewhere around 11"x20"x48". 1

I've got a couple of loaded ammo cans I wanted to put in the bottom so weight capacity is a consideration, but really I just want some room to store oil/grease, empty/loaded mags, eyes and ears, scopes/red dots, slings, targets and whatnot so I can open the cabinet and take something out without having to rearrange everything to do so.

What metal/wood/plastic shelving units do you guys use inside your safes/cabinets/gun rooms?
Will throwing money at it work or would I be better off building my own shelving unit out of wood?
Am I overthinking this and any old shelf will do?

For your application I would use 3/4" X .120" steel angle as brackets and 3/4" plywood for the shelves. You would need to drill holes in the sides of the cabinet with corresponding holes in the angle and then set the plywood shelves on it. Nice low profile with no extra bracketry taking up room.

You have a lot of options. I probably would do as bearcreek suggested. But look at Lowes or Homedepot at the modular wire closet shelf stuff.

I fitted a metal cabinet like that. I took 3/4 plywood cut to fit the inside left and right walls, attached them from the outside, through the cabinet and into the plywood with 3/4" sheet metal screws. It also made the outside of the cabinet nice and clean looking. ( this gave me something to easily attach my modular shelving brackets to. The ones that take the little clips.) Then it was just make the shelves.
