We had our club championship today, nice day, a bit hot and humid for this time of year, but no rain. I shot rather poorly, but still came in second, but no bragging rights. I was about ready to leave after noon when I noticed a couple of younger guys just kinda standing outside the clubhouse. I had not seen them before and I asked them if they were here for the championship shoot. I don't know everyone, we have a couple hundred members. They said they had heard about a shooting club and drove about 25 miles to get here but it wasn't what they expected. They normally used a public range in a game preserve and figured they would come out and shoot pasture clays, but were impressed but very intimidated with the club's ranges and set-up.

I started explaining about the different trap, skeet and sporting ranges and offered to set up another field as the others were being used for our shoot. They bought a couple of tokens for our machines and I took them up to one of our skeet ranges. They had one Mossberg 500 for them both and it had what looked to me like a full choke in the barrel so I offered to let them use my Rem11-87 with a skeet choke, they took me up on that one. I worked with them on all the leads and had them shoot all singles at the stations and they each had at least a 15-17 for their first time out. They were excited and having a great time and said they would be sure to come back and thanked me and a couple of other members there for the good time. Made me feel good.

I also explained that a pump gun can be a slight handicap if you aren't proficient with your gun, but is sure a fun way to shoot skeet and sporting clays and will get you sharpened up for bird hunting. They were going to get another choke tube for it for when they come back.

Hey that's great! Im sure they appreciated your time and help. I always enjoy helping new shooters. Its almost more fun than shooting. Good on you.

Well done! Kudos to kudu! That was very hospitable and exceedingly helpful of you to introduce two young shooters to the various shotgun sports. I trust they were grateful for your time and effort in showing them around and explaining everything to them.

I wouldn't mind learning trap and skeet :). Tho I only have 25 shells logged on my 590 (first time ever shooting a shotgun)

Just about every skeet/trap club that I have ever been to has had friendly helpful folks that will work with new shooters and many shooters are willing to let new shooters try their guns as well. I had every intention of leaving the club a bit early, but stayed an extra hour and helped these guys out, will it bring them back to the club? hopefully, but either way it felt good to make them happy and see them breaking skeet targets.

Awesome Been looking at a few Browning O/U I can't afford for a eventual trap gun. That or the mossberg O/U. Btw why the :cuss: is a simple breech loader so much more expensive than even most semis?

You have 2 barrels that have to be finely regulated so they both hit at same point of impact. Decent entry level target guns are going to be in the $1500+ range. These are guns that will run 75,000 shells before a tune up. Other cheaper O/U's will sometimes wear out in 20-30 thousand shells. Pick your poison, pay now or pay later. And when I say tune up that is just a rework of the action and hinge pins for a few hundred $$.
