A little background on this thread.... I saw an MVP at a local gun shop and I'm intrigued by its use of AR-15 magazines. I currently have a Ruger Mini 14 for use when I'm out in the country for shooting varmints, casual plinking, etc. I have AR-15's (plural) and only one Mini 14. So, I'm wondering what you guys think of trading my Mini-14 in for a Mossberg MVP.

On the pro side: I wouldn't have to sort out the different magazines for .223, I like the accuracy of a bolt gun, and the Mini 14 was never very good with a scope (although it shot well with irons).

On the con side: You usually lose money on trades. The MVP has no iron sights. Semi auto is faster for follow-up shots.

So, people of THR, what do you think? I'm half in half out on this idea.

I'm a fan of KISS. If I had AR-15s, I'd personally have no real use for another small caliber semi-auto, especially one with a different control scheme. My vote would be to go for the bolt gun.

For kicks, get a beta c-mag. 100 rounds in a bolt gun would be a rather unique combination.

I find many of the "tactical" products that Mossberg puts out to be silly. (See the tactical lever action.). However, if you want the MVP, it would probably make more sense than the Mini-14.

I would think that the MVP would be a more accurate rifle compared to the Mini. The Mini is an good reliable rifle and is short and handy. The MVP is basically a hunting rifle or plinking. The MVP will outshoot the Mini beyond 200 yards in accuracy.
