what, exactly, controls the amount of trigger pressure required to trip the hammer?

hammer main spring?

i just accurized mine with a volquertson kit and i'm wondering if the pull is now less than required by nra specs

i know how to measure it but dont have ready access to the tool

maybe its time to buy one?

anyone else out there used this kit?

what were your results?

If you are concerned about trigger pull weight, the easiest thing is to buy a gauge. You can play with hooks and weights but the gauge is the easiest.

I don't think the V. kit will take the pull below NRA minimum unless you do something else.

Ruger trigger pull weight is controlled mostly by the angle and polish of the sear and by the height and polish of the hammer hook. It also can be changed a bit by the trigger bar spring...which is in the kit.
I've installed about a dozen or so of those kits and they usually leave the pull at 2 1/4 to 3#. I say usually because they aren't always that way.

BTW, if you changed the mainspring (lots of fun!) be careful because lots of the time, it doesn't give you enough power for a good firing pin strike and you'll wind up with misfires...and wonder why. I used to change those because they were part of the kit that the customer either brought me or had me order. I stopped installing them because of so many returns to change it back to stock.

Stock Trigger

FWIW: I kept all stock parts in my Ruger Slabside and the trigger pull is about 2.2 - 2.3 pounds.

There are several components in the total pull weight. Trigger return spring, sear return spring, and of course, the sear/hammer "break force" required to move the sear face across the hammer face. That one is slightly affected by sear face angle as a flatter angle means it deflects the hammer (against the hammer spring) less as the trigger is pulled.

IMO, the Volq stuff is not needed. The stock trigger has an overtravel adjust built in (a pain to tweak, but you only do it once). Just polish the contact faces, put on a good slick lube like Militec, and you can get a 2.5 pound pull.

They are handy gadgets, but unless you do a lot of smithing work, you may not want to spring the $40.

There is a home brew way tht real accurate: get a plastic milk carton nd dental floss. Loop the floss through the handle of the jug and tie across the trigger. get a measuring cup and add water. One ounce water equals one ounce of weight. Just fill it up to two pounds (32 ounces) then add a couple of ouces at a time from there. Raise the gun with the water hanging straight down from the trigger, keep going until it clicks. It's actually very accurate, just isn't as easy to use.

i learned the hard way about the trickiness of changing that mainspring

lets just say ruger sold another mainspring assembly a few days back

and i have heard about the light strikes so we'll just forget the changing of the sping, or if i can get the original back together with the volq spring i might compare

i have a couple of different ideas how to reassemble it, hopefull one of them will work,,,

well, my mk II had a lot of creep and also seemed inconsistent in terms of feel from shot to shot even after 2 attempts to make the stock trigger better,

so i replaced everything (except the mainspring) and the release is much crisper,

i do believe it will help my score, cause it sure feels nice, but only a few hunnerd rounds through it will tell me that for sure,,,

havent had a chance to shoot it yet, too much work for the A/C guy this summer

so far so good,,,

i was able to check the trigger pull at the range and it tripped at 2.5 lbs but not 2 lbs and i'm told this is ok, there were no in between weights

i shot the below target with it somewhere near the end of 140 or so rounds

rapid fire / 50 ft

not too shabby but only time will tell the real story,,,

no problems with misfires so far, still has factory ruger hammer spring, everything else in the kit was put in
