Here's the story: So I wanted a great, reliable, durable CCW -- I searched and searched and finally decided on a beautiful Kimber Tactical Ultra II! Wow what a beauty. Well... it failed me... miserably. It kept jamming (failure to feed, failure to eject, and it even stove-piped a LIVE round). So I took it back to the dealer and they sent it off to their gunsmith, which took a week. I got it back on Friday and immediately took it out to the range and put 90 rounds of Winchester white box FMJ through it... the results? Two failure to feeds. That just will not work for me if I ever may need to trust my life with the reliability of my CCW. So I made a deal with the store manager and sold the Kimber back to him (I lost a few hundred dollars -- but hey, they did cut me a check for the difference in price) and purchased the only pistol that I have always put my faith into... a GLOCK. A GLOCK 23! mmm... 13+1 rounds of .40 S&W should be enough ;) It fits perfectly in my hand... I went there planning on purchasing a G30 or G36 and they just didn't fit my hand right. I own a Glock 19 (my very first pistol) and love it and the G23 is identical! The G23 fits wonderfully in my hand and is a caliber with a proven stopping power by law enforcement. Anyways, long story, but I am ecstatic about shooting it Monday afternoon and will let you all know the results!

Dude - I feel Your Pain...

...about the Kimber. I bought a Colt Defender a few years back thinking this short barrelled .45 would be the ultimate CCW piece.

It was....to a point. Accurate as hell, easy to carry, I just couldn't get out of my mind the reliability issue. I could guarantee a number of FTE, jams, what ever in any range session. It was funny, they wouldn't be much of a problem if I just had 6 rds in the mag, but that's not a useful compromise.

Anyways, I dug it out of the safe again to try some Chip Mccormick mags, with it. If I still have an uncomfortably (for me) level of problems at the range, then I'll stick to my G19/1911 or Mak.

As to non-1911 .45 platforms, I've been looking at the SIG 220 / Glock 30 / Glock 36. The Glock 36 evidently has some issues - some work - some don't, and the SIG is kinda bulky, the G30 less so. I'm inching closer to the G30 as my next purchase everyday.

I'm learning fast that a gun is like a good woman - when you find a good one you stick with it!

My first handgun ever - XD .4" 40 has had a couple thousand rounds with only one malfunction that was an ammo issue I belive. It is very reliable.

My 2,400 Wilson had multiple failures the day I bought it - and it went right back to them for service. If I get it back, and have one failure within 500 rounds I will demand a full refund.

My Taurus PT145 Pro was a total POS - I took it back and got all of my money - then went and got an XD Subcompact in .40

Now I have two XDs and I love them. I think that they are close to Glock reliability - and I just like them better than Glock.

I'm glad you got a great weapon - enjoy.

I seem to recall quite a few people recommending not going below a 4" 1911...

Very true. Even Wilson says that anything under 4" ( 3.8 I think is the number he uses...) will be unreliable.

Anyone know of any good aftermarket parts for the G23? (Besides a 9mm/.357 sig barrel) Maybe a KKM barrel? Or are there better barrels out there for it? Also, which holsters fit the glock well for IWB, as I will be carrying it concealed once my CCL gets in (hopefully soon)? Thanks again!

That sucks! In effect, you have yourself a $1000 G23 :banghead: Plus, that shop gets to sell that Kimber again

Yea it wasn't a great deal after having to cough up a lot of money for the Kimber. All in all it was about a 800-850$ Glock (with night sights) and a good learning experience! I'll just leave it as a 'donation' to the shop hehe

I don't mean to offend as it's your choice, but I don't understand your decision.

You bought a compact/baby sized 1911 and then traded it in for a medium sized Glock 23. Why did you not go with a Commander 1911 with an aluminum frame and 4" barrel?

Your Kimber is comparable to the baby Glocks. Why not go with a baby Glock?

For inside-the-waistband, a 1911 is about perfect in terms of width. As I'm sure you know, Glocks are quite thick compared to the slim 1911.

The G23 is a world-class pistol and should give good service. As for aftermarket parts, I personally think the best Glock is 100% factory for reliability and warranty purposes. Kydex holsters are excellent with Glocks. :)

Dude,

I'm happy in regards to your new G23. It is a fine weapon. I have the 22, 19 and 26 and all are as reliable as I could ever ask for.

It sounds like you got taken by your gun dealer. It's not his fault that the gun doesn't function, but he damn sure could have helped you out a little bit more.

Most pistol shooters are very happy with Glock pistols.

Well... except those pistol shooters who have made up their mind that they hate Glocks.

Don't shoot reloads in your new Glock.
You may find that aftermarket rubber doo-dad on the grip to be unnecessary.

Great choice!!! The Glock will not fail you.

In my first two self defense handgun training sessions, my Glock never let me down. Especially, under the hot sun shooting for 4+ hours. The other students that brought their 1911 Kimbers, Springers and Hks were having a jam fest.

I've never heard of getting a full refund for a gun. You got a great dealer.

The Glock choice is a good one. With a Galco inside the waistband holster, I carry a full size Glock 22 or a Taurus 24/7 regularly in summer clothes. While the Glock was a good choice, your gun dealer is not.

The gun dealer I do business with in Fort Smith, Cooper's Gun shop will take a gun back, refund and exchange for a new one if their gunsmith cannot fix the issues. They will then deal with the gun manufacturer. They do not make their customers take a gun then have to deal with issues.

Thanks for the replies!

"You bought a compact/baby sized 1911 and then traded it in for a medium sized Glock 23. Why did you not go with a Commander 1911 with an aluminum frame and 4" barrel?"

I considered going with a comander 1911 4", but after much research on the Kimber section of the 1911 forum, the 4" has trouble as well, and I would rather not cough up another 300 bucks for a coin-flip gun... it may work or it may not... I KNOW the Glock will function perfectly.

Glock 23:

WIDTH -- 30 mm / 1.18 in.
LENGTH -- 174 mm / 6.85 in.
HEIGHT -- 127 mm / 5.00 in.
BARREL LENGTH -- 102 mm / 4.02 in.
WEIGHT -- 21.16 oz. empty magazine

Kimber 4" models (using the Tactical Pro II 4"):

WIDTH -- 1.28 in.
LENGTH -- 7.7 in.
HEIGHT -- 5.5 in.
BARREL LENGTH -- 4 in.
WEIGHT -- 28 oz. empty magazine

The G23 has smaller dimensions in every category, has the same length barrel (well .02 inches more, *slightly* more velocity lol), has been MUCH more reliable than my original Kimber, and shoots just as accurately -- with a more manageable kick in my opinion. The G23 makes it extremely easy for quick and accurate follow-up shots with the .40 S&W 180 grain Speer GDHPs. It also feels great in my hands. It does not pop shells up into my face and burn me like the Kimber did (every so often), which can get rather annoying and distracting. It does not leave brass marks all around the ejecton port and I do not have to worry about scratching the slide or frame. I do not have to change out the recoil spring every 800-1200 rounds, which can cause a cracked frame in the Kimber if not done.

GLOCK 23: 13+1 rounds of .40 S&W

Kimber 4": 7+1 rounds of .45'

"Your Kimber is comparable to the baby Glocks. Why not go with a baby Glock?"

The baby glocks do not fit my hand right and most are too brick-like for my taste. The G23 is very easy to conceal.

"For inside-the-waistband, a 1911 is about perfect in terms of width. As I'm sure you know, Glocks are quite thick compared to the slim 1911."

See the above dimensions ^ ;)

I will go with the glock but others may disagree.

Be safe and best wishes,
Kevin

Shootallatime,
That type of commitment from your dealer to his customers is what we need more of in the USA. Best of luck and keep him in business.

Tell that to my Kimber Pro Carry.

BTW, You can't call me a Glock hater, I'm wearing a Glock 19 Right Now!
(Although I WILL go down as a 1911 nut... I'm wearing the Glock to sweat on it...)

As to the 'width'... they can be decptive... the width of the safety (For instance) MIGHT be the same, but the slide... (Parts that matter for concealmnet) are NOT.

Good example: I can IWB a 1911, AND a IWB mag in pants with a 34 inch waist, but need a 36 for just a Glock...

+1 on your dealer screwing you over.

Colt, Springfield Armory, and Smith & Wesson make commander sized 1911s too. Kimber is not the only game in town.

Having the choice between a medium frame Glock or a commander frame 1911, I'd choose the 1911.

The 1911 slide and frame are rounded whereas the Glock slide and frame is like a block or a brick. The Glock has a large, thick, and blocky trigger guard whereas the 1911 has a small, thin, and rounded trigger guard.

The Glock 23 is a good weapon. In the end, having a gun that you can trust is what matters most. Glocks have many faults, but make up for it with corrosion resistance and are by far one of the most, if not the most, easy to field strip and maintain.

Having less parts than the 1911 gives the Glock an edge in reliability. The 1911 has the edge in style, pointability, and for some models of 1911s, ease of carry.

Buy both!

Stay safe :)

Kimber = Looks Good - Yeah

PRETTY DON'T FEED THE BABY

I bought a GLOCK 21 in 45 acp for the dependability. Looks had nothing to do for it.

I had heard some negative comments when I went to purchase a KIMBER. Not so much in the product, but the customer service behind the product. If you are a LARGE customer purchasing large # of units, they seem to have time for YOU. But if you are mr joe s. the small man customer, good luck on making your case I heard that from more than just a few gun retailers that sold the upper end of the 1911's (i.e.. Colt, Wilson Combat, and Springfield) as well.

I feel as if I would be better off selecting the most dependable weapon for my main carry. Looks was not the priority here. I went with the dependability of the GLOCK as opposed to the looks of a Colt Commander or Wilson Combat Custom of some type. = JOMHO
