How do you feel as MN residents when it comes to your gun rights in ALL RKBA issues?

I will go to a MN state link but I wondered how many MN residents felt that they had it 'pretty good' from a to z.

What about the ELY and outlying areas and cities/suburbs too?

Duluth for example?

Other large cities?

Other rural parts of the state - across the state from N, S, E and W?

Do people have a 'fit' over open carry from a handgun (If allowed there.) to a rifle? Is CCW a shall issue deal?

Thanks for any information.

Catherine - MT

Minnesota born and raised. CCW is Shall Issue. I got my permit quickly and easily and I live in the county with the alledged "worst" sheriff for permits. With the permit you are allowed to conceal or open carry. I've seen people open carry without any problems. The St. Paul/Minneapolis area tends to be somewhat anti gun. In fact I don't think there is a single gun shop in the entire city of Minneapolis. There is however a plethora of gun shops just outside city limits in the suburbs surrounding the city. Duluth is a beautiful city and a great place to visit. Minnesota has great fishing (Land of 10,000 Lakes) and great hunting. When you get to rural areas guns are pretty commonplace and even the suburbs are pretty decent for guns. Suppressors are illegal though which is unfortunate and as far as MG's go I think it's pretty much limited to C&R stuff. You need either a permit to carry or a permit to purchase to buy a "military style sporting rifle" (i.e. AR-15) Any other questions feel free to ask and I'll try my best to answer.

Thanks for the information. I was looking at another piece of land in the ELY and outlying areas.

Sincerely,

Catherine - MT

Ely's a nice place, I haven't spent a ton of time there but I take a week long musky fishing trip every year on Lake Vermillion which is pretty close to Ely. Beautiful lake.

As my moniker implys, I'm also Minnesota born and raised.

I feel privilegded to live in a state that has "Shall issue" and "Carry permits". We don't have to conceal our sidearms (however, I do) while in possesion of our carry permit. Our permit holders are extremely law abiding folks, as they are all around the country.

Our biggest adversary is religion. Several churches filed suit when the 1st carry law was passed and got it recinded on a technicality. Our legislature took care of that and passed the second version soon after. The churches fought it again but so far haven't been able to do anything about this law.

Some counties (Washington Co. was one) have sheriffs that really disliked the "Shall issue" when it first came out and actually refused to give them out at first. (If the sheriff hasn't responded within 30 days by either giving you your permit or formally explaining, in writing, why he won't give you the permit then the permit is automatically issued to you.

Out here in the rural majority of Minnesota it's a non-issue. No one cares and everyone just feels that it's 'heritage'. We actually passed an amendment a few years ago stating that hunting is a Minnesota tradition and our heritage and that it cannot be taken away.

P.S. I second the Ely/Lake Vermillion area. The island camping on Lake Vermillion is exceptional and a real semi-wilderness experiance. Go to the Tower/Sudan State Park and into the mine shaft. it's grat.

Do you need a 'permit' to walk around with a rifle too? That is pretty much open carry big time. My sweet lever action rifles!

On your own property, especially in a rural town or on VERY rural land (Several acres to a LOT of acres.) - that is automatically allowed, right? Your own property as it is in most states... allowed.

I am trying to find a super MN government website on this. Plus the one on vehicle carry - loaded or unloaded. Some of the private sites are not always UPDATED and I could always call the county over by ELY and elsewhere on Friday.

Thanks again. I don't mean to be a pain in the butt here.

You can look up MN gun laws on https://www.revisor.leg.state.mn.us/pubs/ to get the full run down. Go to statutes, then select Statutes by Topic, then select F, and FI to find the firearms listings.
The upside to MN law:
-No Assault weapons ban, although assault weapons are purchased by the same rules as handguns, no magazine capacity limit.
-Shall Issue Permit to Carry, may be concealed or open, no limit on number of handguns that may be carried. Vehicle carry is permitted as long as the individual possesses a carry permit.
The downside:
-Purchasing a pistol requires a permit to purchase handguns(without a permit, buying a handgun requires a waiting period but dealers don't bother with that, they want the purchase permit), but the paperwork to get the permit is easy and basically the same as a 4473. The purchase permit is also shall issue and takes about a week or two to arrive and is good for 1 year. After you get the permit you can walk in, buy a handgun and take it home. The purchase permit is also just that, a purchase permit, no permit is required to own any kind of gun.
-Silencers are forbidden, machine guns and short-barreled shotguns are C&R only. Short barreled rifles are ok though. Also devices which increase the rate of fire of a gun to that of a machine gun are also forbidden.
-Firearms cannot be made of materials with low melting points.

There are some more in the details but that's a basic outline. I would like the permit/waiting period to go away for handguns and I'd like to see all machine guns/SBS's allowed. If that happened I'd be pretty happy with MN gun laws.

Not a lot to add to what has already been stated other than to point out the larger cities here hold the majority of the anti crowd. Twin cities being the worst.

Rural areas abound and there is plenty of firearm and hunting tradition throughout the state. Open carry is not seen much and would likely draw some attention. It is of course allowed & legal if you have a permit to carry.

Firearms in the vehicle must be unloaded and cased with the exception again of the hangun carry permit holders. Long guns are carried afield for hunting on a regular basis, but not generaly carried around town.
