I just purchased a new Model 70 Extreme Weather in .308. The center scope mount holes measure 3.5” (WSM) instead of 3.25” (SA). Is this an issue or do I just need to buy what the gun measures instead of what it “should” be?

Thanks

Well if you go with what you think it should be but isnt, you'll still be buying what it is anyway. So I guess I would skip the first step and just buy what fits to begin with. JMHO.

I already purchased the one it should have been. That’s when I discovered the fit issue. I don’t know enough to know if the WSM receiver height is different front to back vs the SA to cause zeroing issues. Wondering if my firearm was made “differently” or “incorrectly.” Sounds like it is “different” to you so go by measurements and don’t look back. Thank you

I'd call Winchester. I've always used 2 piece bases (Talley Lightweight) and there isn't any difference. But my references show long action, short action, and WSM for one piece bases and rails. Maybe Winchester has changed something.

The short action and WSM stocks are interchangeable, or at least used to be. I had a 300 WSM for a while and stocks, as well as bottom metal were all the same. As were 2 piece bases, but I've never tried using a rail.

Spoke with Winchester and Warne. Confirmed that 3.5” is the correct spacing for a .308 in this rifle. Warne said that Winchester puts the .308 in WSM actions. Apparently SA doesn’t always mean SA cartridges.

Thank you to all who replied.
