I just got a Benelli M4 and my son told me it had a modified choke. Can I safely shoot Foster slugs without damaging the gun?

Foster slug are safe through most chokes up to and including full. It is not a good idea to shoot them through extra full chokes like a turkey choke. Typically the more open the choke the more accurate foster slugs will be but that is not always true. My Rem 1100 shoots slugs most accurately from a modified choke tube. I always used skeet to best effect in my BPS.

You can shoot them through any choke without damaging the gun. That said, the accuracy might not be as good as opposed to using another choke like an IC, but only you can determine that by shooting your ammo in it.

I have played with, researched, shot, reloaded, cast, and recovered (a few) slugs of many types for many years.(I typed "tears" which might be true). I am in no way an expert but in my experience modified has performed as well or better than the imp cylinder that most gunmakers traditionally put on their fixed choke smoothbores. Not all, but most for me. I have an 1100 barrel with an ugly Polychoke that shoots cheap Fosters as well to sixty yards as my old Hastings barrel did with Lightfields. The Foster slugs were designed undersize and the "rifling" ribs were made to squeeze through tighter chokes.
My normal recommendation to beginners with a smoothbore is to try Federal Truball or Brenneke slugs first. Some shotguns shoot great with Foster slugs regardless of choke. My first few deer were taken with my TB 870 and an 18" riot barrel I put rifle sights on.
I quit fooling around three years ago and bought a 220 Savage, the closest thing to a rifle I can use in IL.

One other thing, without good sights you will never know if your shotgun shoots slugs well. Even an inexpensive set of sights that clamp to the rib are better than just a front bead.

I've shot a fair number through a 50 year old Remington 1100 without issue. It had a 28" Mod Choke Barrel. Admittedly it was a bit younger when I was doing that. I have other barrels for it now.
