Hello All,

I have read all of the refinish threads that i could find.

I was wondering if any of you have used the aerosol spray cans?

Is it better to use the airbrushed solutions?

Thanks for your input

If you mean that spray can stuff from Brownells, I've used it. It's horrible. It's the reason I looked for something better, but was hesitant to buy when I discovered Lauer's products. I figured they would be just as bad. I was in for a pleasant surprise though. Their finishes are really good. They look good and are very durable. Several makers such as DS Arms use them on their guns.

Gun Kote

Many of us that do this full time use TR Gun Kote. It's made by a pistolsmith, Alex Hamilton. He makes a lot of "private label" polymer coatings for manufacturers. Its not really for home use, but there's really no reason why you can't use it at home if you have a good spraygun and an oven. You can check him out a www.tenring.com.

Use the air brush. Even a cheap airbrush is much better than any rattle can. The air brush allows you much more control over the thickness of the coating and over where you apply it. Remember, with this stuff, it's designed to go on thin. Thick gets you nothing--except peeling and runs. Surface prep is the key to good looks and a long lasting finish.

Good luck,

For what it's worth...

Use the air brush to get it right the first time (per Lauer). If you mess up, the only way to remove it is sand blast!!!

I have used GunKote in the spray can and it took me three atempts to get it right.I had to glass bead it off.I have found that if you boil a pan of water and put the can in it and take it off heat and let it sit for a few minutes then shake the can,it will mix and spray much better. Before I did this I would shake the can for 35 minutes and still get a blotchey and inconsistance spray.Once I started doing this the spray pattern improved and came out even.I would get a air brush system if you want to get into using this product or other finishes.I think the quality of the finished product would be better. You can adjust the air pressure and spray pattern.just my thoughts.
