Well Salinas Ca residents can sleep better that gang members and thugs are going to give up the means to their livelyhood. It is good to know my tax dollars are being wasted.
What needs to happen is turn in firearm, turn in DNA sample, and handcuffs for all that have prior convictions. Also who knows what is at the Northridge Shopping Center? No one cares if one of these firearms was used to commit one of the 14 gang-related homicides in 2009.

SALINAS, Calif. -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced a new program in Salinas on Friday that provides gift cards for guns.
The Gifts for Guns program allows people to turn in their gun while receiving a gift card -- no questions asked.
The money for the program comes from a $9.2 million state grant that went to four separate cities, including Salinas.
“There’s no higher priority for government than ensuring public safety, and by providing Salinas with the resources they need, we are fighting gang violence with suppression and prevention efforts that will make communities throughout California safer,” Schwarzenegger said in a news release.
The Salinas Police Department will start accepting guns June 6 at the Vineyard Church.
Gun owners who bring in a rifle will receive a $50 gift card, a handgun will bring in a $100 gift card and a $200 gift card will be given to those who turn in an assault rifle.
The gift cards, which are paid for by the Salinas business community, will be accepted by the Northridge Shopping Center.
The Gifts for Guns program was originally started by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department in 2005.
"Salinas, like other California cities, has experienced more than its share of gang violence in the past 18 months," said Paul Seave, director of the Governor's Office of Gang and Youth Violence Policy. "I commend the brave and caring people of this city for their continuing efforts to end this violence through prevention, intervention, and suppression strategies."
Salinas has already witnessed 14 gang-related homicides in 2009.
