Looking for a new barrel for a mosin 91-30. I have not found anything "off the shelf", can someone point me in the direction of an outfit that would do custom work in 7.62/54?

JMHO, but you could probably buy five more 91/30's for what a replacement barrel and the 'smith work would cost you. Maybe more. Several guys have had good luck adapting MG barrels to Mosins, but that's another story.

A lot of people back in the day butchered up a bunch of 03 Springfields and 1917 Enfields that probably would be worth a lot more today if they had been left alone. (Don't get me going on the surplus 1911's that have been accurized, modernized, or improved in the past 50 years) That said, I don't think St. Peter is gonna hold it against you for whatever you decide to do to that Mosin.

Seems like there should be or will be a large market for inexpensive mods to the Mosin. It's an inexpensive gun now and why not tinker with them if you want to?

You might try the search function here on THR. This issue has been discussed many times in the last 5 or 6 years. Google is another great tool for finding answers to questions that many others have asked on many forums.

E R Shaw would be my first stop for a threaded & contoured barrel. I think $350 to $400 would be a reasonable price for barrel and installation.

The Mosin is a bit tricky to rebarrel. You can read all about it in the many previous posts that the search function will provide.

Take the barrels off some Mosin Nagants.

Try swapping the barrels.

9 times out of 10, the bolt will not go in, careful, you don't bend the extractor.

The problem is that the clocking between threads and extractor relief is random.

Each barrel seems to have the extractor relief cut cut custom for a receiver.

What does it all mean?
Buying an off the shelf barrel to screw into your Mosin Nagant receiver is likely to not turn out well, as many of us found out with the VZ59 bull barrels.

I have used the search function, and I have found the following:

-There were some machinegun barrels that were adapted some time ago, now unobtainium.

-Swapping Mosin barrels will require the extractor relief to be cut, not and easy task and requires good machine tools available.

-Someone was told by an unnamed barrel manufacturer that they wouldn't do it.

-An (possibly) intelligent approach would be to use a more standard barrel diameter to shoot more easily available projectiles(.308, etc) and size the brass a little tighter to grip the slightly smaller projectile.

-This process is likely to cost 5-6 times what I paid for the gun, minimum. Many people discourage any serious work on a Mosin for this reason.

Google has provided a list of barrel manufacturers, so far none have answered my inquiries. None list 7.62x54r on their websites.

I have found a wealth of information related to the question that I asked, but I haven't found anything that answers the question that I asked, a manufacturer willing to do this kind of work. If I have overlooked a thread that should have answered this question, please point me in the right direction, but I did try searching before I posted.

This sort of thing comes up every once in a while. Off the wall projects that might be interesting DIY but not just expensive to hire out; impossible to find somebody to fool with it.

I don't know The Answer.

Maybe if you wrote out EXACTLY what you want done and post it here there and yonder, somebody will offer his services or tell you where to go.

Lothar walther will thread & chamber their chrome moly barrels for the mosin. They run around $375 for a.long ir short chambered barrel. Pac-nor & Montana also do barrel blanks in. 311 &. 312 bores
