A week ago I picked up a Mossberg 100 ATR blued synthetic stock rifle chambered in 30-06 from Wal-Mart. At the same time I also purchase a new scope from the low doe section; a Centerpoint Adventure Class 4-16x40mm IR "tactical" rifle scope with a Mil-Dot reticle. I finished by getting a Rock Mount Bipod and sling - all for $371. I went back a few days later and grabbed a box of Federal Power Shok 150gr SP for $10.97.

Sunday we went over to Ben Avery to sight my new "tactical/hunting" rifle in. The weather was 99F, humidity 27%, dew point at 59, and wind from the SW at 8mph but almost directly from behind - not a factor. The rifle was shot from the bench utilizing the bipod with the toe of the stock resting in a sandbag. I really wish we had a sled bc the rifle doesn't weigh much.

I bore sighted at the bench to get things close and decided to shoot 3 shots initially and then make an adjustment. First 3 shots went low right about 4" from bullseye into a 1.2" group. I adjusted the scope and shot 3 more rounds into a .9" group one more small adjustment and 3 shots on bullseye into a .7" group. Then my father in law got a turn and shot a 1.8" group and a 1.6" group all around the bullseye. I took the last two shots one was about half an inch above the bullseye the next shot was a bullseye dead center .3" low.

The trigger had just a touch of creep with a crisp let off. It felt a little heavier than it needed to be. I'm not saying the trigger was crappy just that it lacked refinement. I may end up fiddling with it a little. The bolt was great - I really like the action. I was also surprised that the scope held up so well. Tracking was good. The target knobs made it easy to adjust...the optics were clear and bright (I used 10x the entire time). I would have felt more comfortable with a little more eye relief than the 3.5" or so. Once zeroed I reset the target turret knobs back to read zero. I really like the features of this scope!

Overall the rifle, ammo, and scope performed very well. Once I was settled in the rifle shot better than I expected. Time will tell if the scope will hold zero/last but for now it stays and the rifle can shoot! :D

Congrats on the new rifle and the the great range report!! I've had great success with my .270 ATR. Just goes to show you don't need to spend a ton of money to get MOA (and sub-MOA) accuracy.

I have had good shooting with my ATR-100 in .30-06. Under 2"@100Yds with most commercial 'less expensive' soft-point ammo [Read as Remington 'Core-Lokt' and PMP/Pro-Amm brands]

Much better than me shooting budd got a smidge under 0.7" with Fed Gold Medal Match ammo. I got about a 1.25" group.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes you can get a better overall rifle but you don't have to spend megabucks for MOA accuracy!

I believe it, the mossy's are the most underrated, and under priced rifles on the market right now. I will jump on the next 243. cal I see...

That's a good range report. I have read good things about the Mossberg rifles and it's nice to know that you can get a decent shooting rifle without spending an arm and a leg.

Hey, just signed up for this site today but I've been posting on rimfirecentral since April. i'm planning on getting one of these rifles in .308 with a NCStar 10-40x50mm IR scope within the first half of September. I was wondering how you mount the bipod with the ATR's integrated swivel studs. Is it just like any other swivel stud bipod or does it have to be set up differently?

First off, Welcome!!!

I put one on my rifle, you basically have two options;

1) Get a swivel stud for a wood stock and screw it into the plastic.

or

2) You can do what I did and "modify the mounting hardware from the bipod kit, I ysed a "cheapo" ATI bipod that I got off of eBay for $25.00. You have to cut a groove into the mounting column and slide it over the built in sling attachment.

Here's a link that has some pictures:

The ATI bipod isn't the prettiest thing out there but it gets the job done, if anybody wants to give me one of the nice Harris ones I'll gladly take it :D

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Thanks Smitty, I think I might pay my gunsmith to screw in another swivel stud and use the other to mount a sling.

No modifications were necessary with the Rock Mount Bipod. Loosen the set screw enough to put the stud through the integrated sling mount and tighten it back down - that was it! Also the Rock Mount has a sling attachment point under it so you don't need any additional studs installed. That's what I used anyway. Below is a picture of the arrangement on my ATR:

And I finally took pictures of this thing:

Great post.I purchased an ATR in .270 caliber last year from a local dealer for $229.00 and put a BSA Deerhunter 3x9x40 on top for $49.00 more. At the recommendation of the dealer I shot PMC rounds loaded with Barnes X bullets in 150 & 130 gr. offerings. Great results and I eventually used the 130 gr. load during deer season for a quick clean kill. Total confidence in this set-up for less than $300.

Thanks a lot.

Difficult to believe a US made rifle could be so cheap.

It's twice that price in Peru, but still much cheaper than a Remi or a Ruger.

It is cheap because it doesn't use union labor (neither pro nor con about unions, just a fact - let's not start a union war) and it uses the Savage method of using a barrel nut to attach the barrel and set head-space. Quick, easy, and very consistent method. Plus, it uses a blind-magazine which is cheaper than a detachable magazine or hinged floorplate. Also, the finish is very utilitarian. None of that affects accuracy, of course, but it does make a basic rough-and-tumble rifle.

Similar results from the Mossy 06 I got my son. Used at a pawn shop with a simmons 3x9 by 50 for Lt $250. I have only shot it a couple of times but sub 2in groups with 150gr with Rem CL were std.

Rock Mount Bipods are availavle in most sporting goods sections in Wal-Mart for $39 or at Midway USA for $39 (on sale)...I own a couple of them so I don't have to keep swapping them between rifles.
