I was looking at the .223 version last year but decided against it. If you do a search and you will find the .223 model don’t play nice with all AR mags... I believe the .308 is OK in that regard

Wish it had a peep site. Would have to be mounted on the base screws though. Barrel seems a little to short. Savage hog hunter is ok by me. Hope this does not cause a run and spike in prices and shortage on M-14 mags the way it happened to the FN FAL mags when adapted to I think an AR 10

.308 uses both DPMS pattern AR10 mags AND M1A/M14 mags. The AR mags wobble a lot but still function well.

The .223 model has issues with tight fitment with Pmags, which is very easily addressed in about 10 seconds with a small file.

Does the .308 version use the same cheap, plastic magwell that the 5.56 model uses, or has Mossberg stepped up to some metallic variation for the .308?

The DPMS 308 mag is SR25 style, SR25 is square shape like a G3 mag and wider at the front than M14 which narrows down at front. Does M14 mag fit solid in the mag well?

The difference in the types of magazines the .308 accepts are large enough that one type isn't going to fit all that well nor function well. One size fits all generally means it doesn't work well with any.

To me, these guns would be better off coming with their own fixed 10 round magazine and a stripper clip guide and spending the money on better iron sights aka peep irons. Seems a little on the overkill side for 20 rounds or more magazines in a bolt action.

But that's just me. I'd rather have less rounds, better sights and no fast replacement magazine in such a firearm. Something like the British did with the Enfield.

While the AR10 mags do fit sloppy, the M1A mags fit tight. The AR10 mags function perfectly even when held to full tilt while cycling, they just wobble like a bad WASR. Since it does not affect function, its not really a downside in a $500 rifle. I have since sold both my Mossbergs, .223 and .308. I just could not generate a liking to them, when I already own a decent AR and a VEPR 308 that do everything the bolt guns do. Both Mossberg rifles functioned great and were plenty accurate.

Interesting discussion. 10 seconds or 10 minutes for a modification is irrelevant as I see it if you have to address a magazine issue right out of the box. Had it not been for the mag issue I think I would have purchased one myself but that’s a problem if it only plays nice with some mags. On a side note I have a Kel-Tel SU16 and the Saiga 223 that is modified with the AR to AK mag adapter with LRBHO function. Both the Saiga and SU16 accept a variety of polymer and steel mags and no mods are required are required. There is no wobble and they drop free with the mag release

Although Mossberg has not come out and said it Mossberg is likely targeting folks that live in “ban states” like NY. “Evil features” like Semi-auto’s with detachable mags and Flash hiders are a whole different ballgame in places like in CA, NJ, and NY. That is one reason why this configuration may become popular.

There are any number of bolt-actions already on the market that use nondetachable magazines, and you can always use 5- or 10-round magazines if you don't like 20's.

There aren't all that many bolt-actions that use standardized detachable magazines, though, so the MVP helps fill that niche.

Given that about half my M14 mags fit my .308 MSR mag well and the rest are just a sliver too long and the width is just about perfect, I would say that I do not share that opinion. Dimentionally they are very very close.
