This is a simple one: are the internals on the Mossberg 590 the same as the internals on the 500? I know that the barrels are not interchangeable, but I have not been able to find information about the internals. Thanks!

I think they are, but I can't say for absolute certainty. I know the recievers will accept the same stocks and you should be able to swap mag tubes (and by extension, barrels) between models. I don't see why they wouldn't be the same.
Note: on some older Mossbergs, it is near impossible to unscrew the mag tube. Mine is like that.....they used black loctite at the factory.

The 590 has a pull-through cleanout magazine tube, accessible at both ends - the 500 (unless it's a MILS gun, which is really a 590 anyway) does not. Far as I know, the receiver internals are pretty much the same, save for the trigger plate assembly on the 590A1.

Some 500s have one action bar, some have 2. Some have spring assisted bolt locks, some don't. Some have elevator actuated interrupters, some have bolt slide actuated interrupters. IIRC there are 2 or 3 generations of 500 bolts.

Depends how old your 500 is.

Well, I've not bought either yet. I've heard and read that the 500 is relatively easy to take apart and maintain, so I was just curious if the 590 is similar. Seems like they're at least close.

They're similar enough that if you can manage to field strip one, you can easily manage the other as well.
