Hello all ! great forum here...Loads of good info...I'm about to purchase my first 12 ga primarily for HD...I allready own a remington 870 tactical 20 ga. I've narrowed it down to the Mossy 500 persuader w/ 18"barrel or 590A1 w/ 18"barrel,both w/ full stocks...I've held both, used and shot both...They both will certainy fill the job I'm sure, but I just don't know if the 590 is worth the $110 difference on the price tag...The 590 was a bit heavier,a tad front heavy when fully loaded, and the 500 has the plastic safety,(which I would replace immediately with a metal one)and the plastic trigger housing...Otherwise,aside from the obvious they felt pretty much the same...They're both nice guns...Just trying to decide if the 590 is is woth the extra $110 bucks...Any info appreciated..

In my opinion, not worth the $110 difference unless you plan to sell it some day. The plastic parts and thinner barrels of a 500 don't have a reputation of breaking. The 590/590A1 line is all about cosmetics and fancy sights. If you don't have a good use for a fancy sight I'd just get a 500.

Full disclosure: I have a 590, I liked the idea of a park finish and the money wasn't an issue. If I had to do it over again I might go with the 500.

One of the best features of pump shotguns is the ability to change barrels easily. You can have a 18.5" barrel for home defense and in 30 seconds put on a 28" barrel and go shoot clays. If this is appealing to you then get the 500 model. There are many different barrel lengths available and they are inexpensive compared to other brands. There are no long barrels available if you have the 590 with extended mag tube.

I bought a Mossberg 500 (Persuader). I've tortured it with round after round, never had even one stoppage or problem of any kind. I just added a Knoxx Spec Ops stock (with recoil supression). Can't wait to try it with the new stock.

I have the same thing, and the other posters are spot on. The 500 with an accessory barrel makes for a great all purpose package. I have a Persuader, full stocked, with the 18.5" on it, and the 28" mod choke bbl. in a box. Maybe add a slug bbl, and you have 3 shotguns for one comparatively low price. In my opinion, the 500 is the smart choice.

I just bought the 500 Pursuader last week and have already ordered some accessories for it. I took it apart today for a thorough degreasing (looked like a dang mosin nagant in there!) and found the guts of this particular shotgun to be perfectly sufficient for it's intended purpose. (Non military use)
People gripe about the trigger gaurd being plastic all the time and I just don't see it being a problem. If the rails or the firing pin assembley were made of plastic I could see how that could be a problem, but the trigger gaurd just doesn't field nearly as much abuse as a lot of people think it does. (just my opinion)
The 590 is an awesome shotgun, don't get me wrong, but the 500 has more than enough strength in desgin to withstand anything the average home defenseman can put it through.
My Knoxx Spec Ops Adjustable stock (w/out recoil red.) is on the way and I too am looking forward to installing it, but after thoroughly inspecting the trigger gaurd and trigger asselmbly today, I have officially scratched it from my list of things to worry about.
If money is an issue and you're on the fence about the 590 vs. the 500, I say go with the 500. If money is Not and issue, I say go with the 500 and buy more goodies for it!

The 590 is the weapon that passed all the military testing. However many units have procured the 500 on local contracts and it does OK. For HD the 500 is just fine. I have versions of each and I am not picky about whch one I grab except for work, then the 590A1 (bead sight) gets the nod.
You will not regret buying the 500. Additonally as indicated aboe the barrel changes are quick and cheap with the 500. Other than a butt cuff, and maybe a light, do NOT load it down with crap-you will have a much better handling weapon. And for HD do NOT put a sling on, it is a waste of money and will hang up on something a the most inconvenient moment-I promise.
