How do these two guns compare?

I know that the safeties are different as well as the slide release positions.

I am left handed, so the tang safety on the Mossberg would be good for me. And I like the position of the slide release on the Mossberg better.

But, what about the materials their made from, the designs, weight, ease of operation, smoothness, sights, etc.?

Any of the Big Four, plus the Italian jobs, are an amazingly effective tool in TRAINED,COOL HANDS. The user IS 90%, the weapon maybe 10%.

Get the one that feels best and try to wear it out by BA/UU/R. By the time it gets work polished and slick, you'll be deadly with it or any other shotgun.

Some specifics....

The 500s lighter than a similarly equipped 870 by a few oz. No es importante.

Ease of operation, with the slight exception of the safety location, no prob.

Smoothness, no difference when used, cherished and lubed.

Sights, alla samesame.

Longevity, the 870 outlasts everything except Stonehenge. The 500 is good for at least 35K rounds, maybe more.

Aftermarket goodies, the 870 has the edge.

I've got both. They are about the best firearms value going.

I would suggest checking the Pawnshops for an 870. They ususally have tons of them and might be willing to deal (thats how I got mine)

As for the Mossberg 500 I would check the sporting goods superstores
There have been sales for the Persuader ranging from $129 for the basic
to $179 loaded.

The 870 has a smoother action and is made of high quality steel.

The mossberg is made of less expensive but still rugged materials.

I've fired hundreds of rounds out of each and must say the 870 is a better gun but the mossberg fits the combat role a little better due to its light weight and design.

I narrowed it down to the same two in my search for a shotgun. The deciding factor for me was quite simply the slide. If you are going to use it for hunting (I use mine for deer and turkey) get the 870. The Mossberg slide has a much looser fit and tends to rattle more than I like. I know it isn't much but the 500 and 870 both suited my needs and both fit well.
Go to a store that sells both and compare side by side.

Both great guns. Pick either one and you w ill be happy. Its just a shotgun so don't get too picky. I have a 870 HD that I use mostly for skeet and I do really well. I had a Ithaca 37 featherweight that I wore out by shooting it for many years and many 1000s of shells.

I can shoot just about any pump shotgun well so I don't worry about the details too much with them. The Moss will kick a bit more but that tang safety is soooo much better than the cross bolt on the 870. The Moss is lighter and has an alloy receiver so it is both easier to handle and less durable. I think the 870 is worth a little more expensive so if all else fails you can let price be the deciding factor on this one.
