After a debate over getting the Mossberg or a Benelli Nova Tactical, I bought the Mossberg from Dicks.
The Slugger is a synthetic stocked 22in ported, rifle barreled slug gun that has a retail of $270 and a sale price of $199. I picked through several trying to find one that wasn't scratched, purchased it and went home. The preservative the factory uses reminded me of a cosmo'd up Milsurp... Nasty. While cleaning the bore, I noticed that it was quite dark and liberal amounts of Butches Bore Shine and bore brush weren't improving things. Further investigation showed that it was indeed, rusty. Back to Dicks I go. They replaced the barrel with a rust free unit. A detail strip removed the filth that the factory left for me. As a side note, I have never purchased a new firearm that was pre-dirtied, a very strange experience. It appeared to be solidly build, and worked smoothly when clean.
The sights are an example of why this gun was on sale of $199. The rear sight was all plastic, and the leaf was loose in its dovetail. The the adjustment screws were a weird size and would require a jewlers screwdriver to adjust.
Range time:
I purchased 7 boxes of slugs; 3in Winchester Sabots, 2 3/4 Winchester Premium Sabots, 2 3/4 Brennike Sabots, 2 3/4 Federal Copper Sabot, Winchester 2 3/4 sabots and 2 3/4 Remmington Buck Hammers.
Recoil was harsh, especially off of a bench, rested on sandbags. All the slugs did shoot well, showing no real brand preferance, they all shot 12in. left of center at 50 yards. The rear sight was moved an 1/8in over and they centered nicely. Groups were best with the Brennike slugs, and the Buckhammer slugs.
Is the Model 500A Slugger worth the price, I would say so, if you get one with a clean bore and don't mind the archaic sights. YMMV
