I been looking at the mossberg 930 and would like to know is it any good as far as reliability and would you recommend it for home defense

I have not found it to be reliable. Regret the 930 I have as does my friend. Plan to sell mine. The only semi auto I have seen that has been consistently reliable is the Benelli M4.

i have a friend who has a mossberg auto and he calls it his goat stake. not reliable at all. i run my rem 1100 and 11/87,s 600 rounds before a major cleaning. i shot three rounds of sporting clays 150(reloads 18gr red dot one oz shot) shells last fall with a 35 year old 1100 12ga with out a hicup. for the 249.00 i paid for that rem it has been well worth the price. eastbank.

Ive heard both sides on reliability.
My understanding s that there were inital issues with the 930 and that Mossberg worked hard to fix them.
I would like to get my hands on one and work with it. Put several hundred maybe a thousand rounds down range and then tear it apart and see what's going on.

Mine has been reliable (on a monthly shooting basis) with everything except some low-powered buckshot loads. I think it may be one of those firearms that benefits from a little 'wearing in'.
Some things to be aware of....

If you're a fan of Federal's line of buckshot, you may find that you lose a round of capacity with that brand. Federal seems to be about >-< longer than other brands and when you add it up >------< it's just enough to keep the last round out of the magazine. A change in mag spring solved that for me.

Magpul T-nuts and a Picatinny rail will fit beneath the handguard nicely, allowing an AFG or other item to be fitted.

Leave the hammer cocked when disassembling (as the instructions say), otherwise you wind up looking for parts on your shag rug.... or so I've heard.

I have had a 930 since they first cam out (2005?), it is the field model with walnut stock and 28" barrel. I originally bought it on a whim, but it has become my go-to 12ga. 10,000+ rounds through it with no problems. It will cycle everything from 3/4oz reloads to 3" mag steel and slugs without a hiccup. It is also one of the softest shooting autos I have fired.
I have also sold a bunch of them in various configurations, and IME it is as reliable as any other gas gun on the market, and will digest a much wider range of loads than an inertia gun without beating you up with recoil.

I believe Jerry gets paid to use one.
I have a friend who has one, and in several years of shooting it he has had no issues. That's about all I know firsthand.

Bought my 930 about 3.5 years ago .over 1300 rounds no malfunctions at all with factory ammo.mine is a little picky with handloads though. Great shotgun.

At this point I only have 250 or so rounds through my 930, but it has been flawless. I really like the gun and I see it replacing my 500.

They can be spotty. I might buy another for hunting, but wouldn't trust it for SD. My brother and I had one each years ago that we duck hunted with. Neither were 100% reliable. A friend had one that was. I ran across a great deal on one that I cut the stock down on for my son to use when he was 10. It never gave a minutes trouble and was a good first gun for him.

The recoil buffer tube is in the stock, it seems like a major operation to reduce LOP on them
Good reminder. It has been noted to be a bit overlong. Mesa Tactical has come up with an excellent answer to that (although it makes the safety a bit of a reach).
