Bought a used Mossberg 500 $150, test fired four slugs and my shoulder is still sore . Found the bolt and trigger assembly were gummed up and safety was very hard to push.Scrubbed everything down with CLP and removed the small bent up plate under safety switch, all works good and smooth now except for me . Have plans to refinish the receiver and install new recoil pad, also will shoot at a outdoor range the indoor only allows slugs.

I have a number of shotguns, but one in particular that I have been shooting quite a bit is the 12ga. 4 1/2 lb 18" Midland Back Pack. I normally will shoot about 25 shells, at a time of full buckshot, but have done as many as 50..I found this pad below to be a big improvement in absorbing the recoil along with a rubber recoil pad from Pachmayer decelerator.
Have only minimal discomfort the next day and very little while shooting. I have a Mossberg Flex 20 ga. for home defense and with that pad and the fact that a 20 ga is mild to shoot, I can do a whole lot of training in one day.

By the way, you sure got a great deal.

Thanks for the suggestions , the recoil pad on the gun now is very hard and rough shape. After viewing some shooting tips should have held more toward my chest. Here is picture next to my dads old JC Higgins

I use one of those PAST shoulder pads too! Makes for a pleasant day of shooting shotguns!

Remington, Winchester, Federal, Fiocchi,.....load reduced velocity slugs under tactical or reduced recoil labels. Another plus for 12ga. At one time one could buy bucket of B&P target slugs, but I'm not sure they still load them. One of the best is Federal Truball loaded to 1350fps make sure not to get the ones loaded to 1600fps. One oddity are Truball penetrators that are surprisigly loaded to 1350 fps. These are great but seem to produce more smoke than others which maybe problem at indoor range.

I am a Rem 870 man, but I would find your $150 wood stocked Mossberg 500 hard to pass up. Great deal.

I second/third the suggestion of a PAST recoil shield. Will make your range time and after more fun & less painful.

You have a fine bit of kit to work on and learn on.

Thanks all for the tips also watched some videos on shotgun recoil . Didn't really need it bought a anti walk pin and Opsol mini clip , Academy Sports across town may have mini shells and Limbsaver in stock. I sanded down a the bobbed cover up job to reveal etched initials
