A friend of mine called and said he had something for me and was coming by today.
Well, Clay showed up and gave me a nice little Mossberg 142k bolt action.
He told me that he remembered that I had one that needed some work and thought that I would like a nice one.
I have to say, it’s like Christmas in March.:D
It has an old Wee Weaver-M.3-29 which is still nice and clear. FB2B2F14-F030-447E-9AC9-30609CA267E4.jpeg 70125272-2FBC-481C-BF54-E83D05D290D0.jpeg 2065C5F1-0451-4337-A872-5F7589E76534.jpeg B1AAADB9-279D-4D06-9E2D-08DFCB49399C.jpeg D0CD8695-7280-42DA-BB7E-9DFCA4659B58.jpeg

Very nice gun, that weaver really adds to the coolness do me. I've wanted to find one of these mossbergs for my dad. It was his first gun, problem is he can't remember the model number. They had quite a few different models back then. Wish I could find his mauser my grandmother have him, she shot the state record deer with that byf43 in I think 1956.

Give a call to Nordic Pawn and Sport Shop in Wildwood, FL. 352-748-2210
He has 4 or 5 Mossbergs that have the flip down fore grip, but I'm not sure of the model numbers.

Wow, he wasnt kidding, thats a time capsule right there!

A time capsule gun, indeed.

Congrats, Gunny. That rifle is in fantastic condition.

What a nice gift! Looks like you got the high-capacity magazine in yours. I hope you aren't breakin' any local laws. :D

BTW, the 142 was featured in the I have this old gun... installment of the March 2020 American Rifleman magazine. According to the article the wood mono-pod means your gun was an early-year production out of the 1953-1957 run.

No laws broken. The gun laws in Louisiana are pretty lax when it comes to guns. You can transfer any gun as long as the person can legally own it. That a so goes for long guns from out of state. For handguns from out of state all you need to do is transfer it through a FFL dealer. But enough of that legal BS. ;)

I need to dig out my other 142 and finish clean it up. If I remember right it is missing the rear sight and the wood mono-pod has wood missing at the top on both sides.
I think I have a rear peep sight, somewhere.o_O
I have an original, new synthetic mono-pod a friend sent me a while back. I may use it instead of fixing the wood one.

Gunny

I know the first thing I thought of when I saw your photo is that it must have come from either a time capsule or else your friend has been doing some time travelling! It looks fantastic and that "Wee Weaver" scope on it is just the cherry on top of the icing, on top of the cake!

I have a semi auto version, M153 i believe. It is heavy for a .22. Mine doubles on occasion, so i don't take it out much. Need to fix that. Got it at a pawn shop, need to look into why these guns will do that. Wood is in very good condition, and the plastic "finger grip" isn't warped on mine, as some are.

LOL I was being sarcastic towards the states that limit magazine capacity. Some of them are about one misinformed step away from classifying that 142 as weapon of war. .22 caliber just like the military uses, a "tripod" and scope for sniping, an army-style sling, bolt-action like tens of millions of soldiers have used in scores of wars, and that evil-looking high-capacity magazine. :D

Very nice! I collect old Mossberg .22s. I really like the 142/152 series. I have 4 of one and 5 of the other. They are compact, accurate guns and very simple to work on. I glue a little square of tire inner tube in the front of the forend channel. It stops damage when it snaps shut. They always snap shut if your not careful. Enjoy it.

I'm thinking about picking up the Mossberg 151 m/b that I've got on lay-away, since I'm now getting paid to stay at home.
I've already picked up the aperture, sling swivels and M1907 sling.
Something to do while I'm home-bound... .

I dug out my other 142. It’s a 142A.
The difference between the 142A and the 142k are the sights.

The Model 142, made in the period 1949-1957 was equipped with the S109 front sight and the S108 Receiver rear sight.

The Model 142K made in the period 1953-1957 was equipped with the S133 front sight and the S134 rear sight.

Here are pics of my 142A.

Looks like someone cut the stock for a scope mount at some point.

Here’s the damage on the stock.

This was the sales tag that was on the rifle when I bought it. When I pointed out that it was a bolt action and not a semi auto, and the stock damage. I got it for $100 out the door.
