Mossberg 500 or 590 or 590A1.

Remington Marine Magnum.

I can't choose. I know the Magnum is more expensive. However I hear a lot of good about Remington. Does the "Magnum" part mean it kicks more? I know Mossberg is for people on a budget. That's me to a T. However I want a good gun that will last. If I get the Mossberg, how much would it cost to have a better safety put on it? Would it be easy enough for me to do it myself? I'm new so please be patient with me.

do you actually need a "marine use" shotgun, or do you just like the way they look?

Does the "Magnum" part mean it kicks more?
magnum is just there for marketing, and cause of the now standard 3" chamber. it only kicks more if you use the 3" shells.

plenty of people not on budgets prefer mossbergs, too.

"better" safety? the 590a1 comes with a metal safety, iirc, but there's nothing wrong with the plastic one.

Mostly I just love the way they look. I'm not using it on a boat orsomething like that.

I heard the plastic ones break a lot.

"What's your intended usage environment?"

A dry, somewhat dusty, dark place.

Your profile says you're in NC, so at least you have a coast, rivers, and lakes to sail on. The Remington would be OK for those.

You live in a humid place. The Marine Magnum would be a worry-free gun, and therefore, not a waste. HD guns are seldom fired, they sit for a long time; rust is a FAR greater concern than wear. Therefore, the Aluminum receiver Mossbergs are a good, inexpensive alternative to the 870, though you'll want to oil the barrel.

I like the way the 870 cycles (when oiled lightly). That's another priority for an HD gun.

Remingtons and Mossbergs are the top LE guns. They both pass performance tests. The 870 receiver will last longer when used heavily, but with an HD gun, this is a total non-issue.

The Benelli Nova is a good choice, also. It's plastic and parkerized, so it also won't rust easily. It's cheaper than the Marine Magnum, but more expensive than other alternatives, usually.
